RUSSIAN CULTURE

Introduction

Population: 150 million people.

The country has gone through many changes in recent
years, as communism ended in 1991. At that time, the U.S.S.R.
as it was called, separated into independent states. This
separation ended the communism reign that had lasted from
1917 to 1991.
Political and economic stability, key government reforms,
immense resources, a huge labour force and strong
international trade.
Russian is the only official language.

Communication Styles
There tends to be very little visual or verbal
feedback during meetings in Russia.

People listen silently and with little obvious

body language being displayed.

This does not, however, mean that the listener

is disinterested or does not understand - it is
merely
a
cultural
characteristic
which
Russians share with, amongst others, the
Finns and the Japanese.

Business Structures

Autocracy and centralised decision-making are synonymous

with the Soviet system in many people's eyes and this
approach can certainly be seen to be manifested within
large Russian business organisations.

Russian companies tend to be driven by one strong central

figure who will make strategic decisions with little or no
consultation with anyone other than a handful of close
trusted advisors.

Appearance

Business men in Russia usually wear suits that are dark and
well tailored along with good dress shoes.
A business mans wardrobe demonstrates the individuals
image as a professional.
Skirts should be worn rather than pants.
When attending dinner in a citizens home, casual dress of
slacks and a nice shirt without a tie are appropriate.

Men often do not take off their jackets in negotiations.

Do not stand with your hands in your pockets. This is
considered rude.
Women dress rather conservatively, avoiding overly flashy or
gaudy outfits.
Russians will tend to wait and think before responding to a
point made to them - do not be impatient.

Allow the Russians the time and space needed to take part fully
in the conversation.
Speaking or laughing loudly in public is considered rude, as
Russians are generally reserved and somber.
Good topics of conversation include peace, the current changes
taking place in Russia, and their current economic situation.

Etiquette and Customs in

Russia

Business Meeting Etiquette

The typical greeting is a firm, almost bone-crushing handshake while

maintaining direct eye contact and giving the appropriate greeting for the time
of day.
When men shake hands with women, the handshake is less firm.
When female friends meet, they kiss on the cheek three times, starting with
the left and then alternating.
When close male friends meet, they may pat each other on the back and hug.

Meetings and negotiations

Meetings and negotiations are slow. Russians do not like bing rushed.
It is a good idea to include technical experts on your negotiating team.
Hierarchy is important to Russians. They respect age, rank and position.
The most senior person reaches decisions.
Russians see negotiations as win-lose. They do not believe in win-win scenarios.
Russians view compromise as weakness. They will continue negotiating until you
offer concessions.
Negotiations with Russians often involve flared tempers. During negotiations and
meetings, temper tantrums and walkouts often occur.

Conclusions

Russia is not just a country of contrasts; it is a country of

outright contradictions.
Studying culture business partners in Russia was very
exciting because I could teach manners, communication,
behavior, and not only, used in business in this country.
This is necessary to develop a business with Russian
partners or in Russia and to learn something more about
this country.
