PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)

TREATMENT

INTRODUCTION

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is cutting edge

therapy in the field of cosmetic enhancements.
Although the procedure is relatively new ,PRP
has been recognized as an effective treatment
in sports injury, diabetic ulcer treatment, and
orthopedics to name a few.
Now patients who wish to use their own
bodys regenerative power can do so without
the concerns for infection, foreign material, or
surgical interventions.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is

blood plasma that has been enriched
with platelets. As a concentrated source
of autologous platelets, PRP contains
several different growth factors and
other cytokines that stimulate healing of
bone and soft tissue.

PLATELET RICH PLASMA

What is PRP?
Human blood is comprised primarily of red blood cells (RBC), as well as
white blood cells (WBC), platelets, and plasma.

By initiating the first step of coagulation, platelets are the key to the
bodys ability to heal wounds.

It is thought that by increasing the platelet count in a wounded area,

the bodys healing to that area would be accelerated explaining the
use of PRP (platelet rich plasma) in wound healing.

Platelet rich plasma is concentrated blood plasma which contains

approximately five times the number of platelets found in normal
circulating blood. In addition, blood plasma contains the growth factors
PDGF and VEGF and other bioactive proteins that aid in wound healing.

PREPARATION

There are, at present, two methods of PRP

preparation approved by US FDA.[3
] Both processes involve the collection of
whole blood that is anticoagulated with
citrate dextrose) before undergoing two stages of
centrifugation designed to separate the PRP aliquot
from platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells.[
3] In humans, the typical baseline blood platelet
count is approximately 200,000 per L; therapeutic
PRP concentrates the platelets by roughly five-fold.

COMPOSITION OF BLOOD
R.B.C- 93%
W.B.C1%
PLATELETS AND PLASMA-6%
@Platelet activation -------- Growth Factor
release-------------accelerared tissue and
wound healing.

PREPARATION

PRP can easily be seperated from blood ,

through a process of CENTRIFUGATION
Using your enriched plasma permits the
body to heal faster and more efficiently
because your plasma (autologous) is
used there is no danger of disease
transmission or allergic reaction.

BASIS PRP

The basis of PRP lies in decreasing RBC

count to 5% since they are less useful in
healing process while increasing platelet
count to 94%
PRP or blood plasma is the source of
concentrated platelet content present in
the blood.

Acceleration of healing of tendon injuries

osteoarthritis treatment
jaw reconstruction
cardiovascular medicine.
The concentrated form of plasma has been shown to accelerate
wound healing and tissue repair and, thus, could potentially
benefit hair restoration procedures
In hair transplantation, PRP can be injected into the recipient site
area to theoretically stimulate the healing of the
transplanted grafts and into the donor area to facilitate healing
of the donor incision.

PRP AND FUE

Follicular unit transplantation outcomes may be

increased by the correct application of PRP.

Donor site pre-treatment with PRP ( purpose is to provide

platelet cell therapy and platelet-derived growth factors,
both of which are key elements in wound healing).
Recipient site pre-treatment with PRP ( this seems to be
an important factor affecting graft growth and survival
rates).
Optimal use of intra-operative PRP and platelet-derived
growth factors, in and around the graft
Graft emersion in PRP ( soaking the graft in the PRP gel)

PRP AND FUE

Following advantages are claimed by use of

PRP
to enhance donor site wound healing
to decrease the incidence of infection
to reduce donor scarring
to increase donor scar tensile strength
to enhance recipient site healing (which
should increase growth)
to be utilized as an effective treatment
protocol in severe cases of wound dehiscence
or infection.
