A STUDY ON THE ABILITY OF SECOND GRADE


STUDENT OF SMAN 1 KUANTAN HILIR IN
COMPREHENDING REPORT TEXT

CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND

Reading is a crucial part of English as foreign language learning and teaching


activity. Reading ability to comprehending a text makes the students able to
understand what the text tells about from the text. Beside that if the students able to
getting the main point of the texts it will help the students to improve their
knowledge or their comprehending about the text.

According to Perry and Ron (2001), the purpose of text report is to give a truth account
of something, somebody, some place, or same activity after investigating and
collecting the facts Then, report text has language features, there are present tense,
third person, heading and subheadings, use of technical and scientific language,
selective use of adjective and adverb for description, action verb to describe
behavior, use of cause and effect in presenting information, generalization visual to
assists presentation and for classification.

According to the curriculum 2006 (KTSP) for senior high school there are 2
kinds of the text that should be learning of the student when their learning in
the classroom. In monolog text, there are 12 genres of the text like as
procedure text, recount text, descriptive text, news item text, report text,
analytical exposition text, hortatory exposition text, explanation text,
discussion text, review text and spoof text. In this research, the writer focus in
report text.

Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested to conduct a


research entitled Study on the ability of second grade student of
SMAN 1 KUANTAN HILIR in comprehending report text.

The Formulation of the Problem

How is the ability of the second grade of SMAN 1 KUANTAN


HILIR in comprehending report text?

Which aspect of report text is the most difficult for the second
grade students of SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir to comprehend?

The General Objective of the Research

To know the ability of the second grade students of SMAN 1


KUANTAN HILIR in comprehending report text.

To find out Which aspect of report text is the most difficult for the
second grade students of SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir to comprehend

CHAPTER III
Research Methodology

The Location and Time of the Research

The research was conducted at SMAN 1 KUANTAN HILIR. It is located on


Jalan Sudirman, Baserah, Kuantan Singingi. The research was hold on
December 2015.

The population and Sample of the Research

Frankel and Wallen (1993) state that a population is the group to which the
result of the study is intended to apply. The population of this research is
Science class and social class of second year students of SMAN 1 KUANTAN
HILIR in academic 2014-2015.The population are 198 students that consist of
six classes.

According to Gay (2000), if the population is large and spread out in an intact
group that has similar characteristic, cluster sampling is useful. Cluster
sampling is a sampling technique where the entire population is divided into
groups, or clusters and a random sample of these clusters are selected

Data and Instruments

The data that will be used in this research is quantitative data. The writer
constructed the instrument in objective test by offering multiple choices by
considering the number of text types for the second year students of SMAN 1
Kuantan Hilir. The writer used a test as the instrument to collect the data and
the tests consist of 30 items. The students will be in order to answer the test
correctly based on the provided reading comprehension of report text.

Technique of Collecting Data


The writer collected the data in order to answer the question of this
research, the writer distributed a set test of the second year students
of SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir. The writer asks the students to answer
the test instrument of this research and in this research the writer
used multiple choice test. The test consists of 30 questions from SIX
kinds of texts which are report text. The time for students to answer
the tests is 45 minutes.
Before the test administered for the students, the test material will
tried out to the students who are not involved as the sample. The try
out was conducted to find out the validity and realbility of the test.
Heaton (1975) say that from the try out, it could be seen whether the
index of difficulty of a particular item is easy or difficult .Heaton
(1991) states that the test items are accepted if the score is between
0.30-0.70 and it is rejected if the degree of the difficulty is less than
0.30 (too difficult) and over 0.70 (too easy).

CHAPTER IV
RESEARCH FINDINGS

The Presentation of the Research Finding

This research focuses on the students ability in comprehending


report text which has some components of report text there are
finding the main idea, finding factual information, finding meaning
of vocabulary, finding reference and finding inference. In the real
test which is aimed to collect data was administered to 66 students
of XI IPA2 and XI IPA3 of SMA Negeri 1Kuantan Hilir.

In short, the mean score of the students in comprehending report text


is 53.87. It can be stated that the ability of the second grade
students of SMA Negeri 1 Kuantan Hilir in comprehending report
text is Mediocre (53.87). It means that most of the students are
classified in mediocre level, they have not reached minimum
standard of this school. It is also the indicator about their
understanding the texts.

The Mean Scores of the Students Ability


in Comprehending Report Text

From the table shows that from 5 components of reading comprehension,


the mean score of finding main idea (66.83) is classified as good, the mean
score of finding factual information (58.01) is classified as mediocre, the
mean score of finding meaning of vocabulary (48.90) is classified as
mediocre, the mean score of finding reference (53.93) is classified as
mediocre, and the mean score of finding inference (37.98) is classified as
poor. Besides that the mean score ability of the students based on the table
is mediocre. It means that for the students are classified in mediocre level,
they have to learn more to get good ability.

From the table also shows that the most difficult aspect in comprehending
report text is finding inference, with the mean score 37.98.Besides that the
easiest is finding main ideas with the mean score is 66.83. It is also the
indicator about their understanding to the texts.

The Interpretation of the Research


Findings

In comprehending report text test, the mean score of the second grade students
ability of SMA N 1 Kuantan hilir in comprehending report text is 53.13 and
was analysis based on Hatch and Farhady formula. Besides that based on the
research finding in comprehending report text there are 7 students get excellent
level. It means that they could comprehend the text very well. Then, there are
21 students categorized into good level, it means they have good ability in
comprehending report text. After that there are 14 students categorized into
mediocre level, and there are 24 students categorized into poor level. It means
that the students should practice more in comprehending report text because it
is not reach the standard minimum criteria (KKM) of this school.

The researcher also found out from the five components of reading
comprehension by King and Stanley (1989) the most difficult aspect is the
student ability to finding inference with the mean score 37.98. On the other
hand the easiest aspect of report text is finding main idea with the mean score
is 66.83. Meanwhile, the other aspects such as finding factual information
58.01, finding meaning of vocabulary with mean score 48,90, finding reference
53.93.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS

Conclusions

Based on the research finding, in ability of comprehending report


text, there were 7 students get excellent level, there were 21
students in good level. After that, 14 students were in mediocre
level, and 24 students were in poor level. The researcher also found
out that the mean score of the students ability in comprehending
report text is 53.13. It means that the students ability in
comprehending report text the students were in mediocre level and
the students cannot reach the minimum standard of this school
(KKM).

Besides that the highest means score is in finding mean idea with
66.83 and the lowest is finding inference 37.98. Besides that the
other aspects such as finding factual information is 58.01, finding
meaning of vocabulary with mean score 48.90 and finding reference
is 53.93.

From the conclusion above, the writer would like to give


recommendations.
Considering that the students ability level in comprehending report
text is mediocre level, it is recommended that the students should
do more practice reading a book about report text especially about
finding inference.
For English teacher should have some effort to develop the
students motivation and encourage them to practice in
comprehending report text in order to make the students familiar
with reading materials in terms of five indicators of reading
comprehension especially in finding inference.

3. The last one, the researcher recommended other researches to


continue the research findings in the other kinds of research.
