Subject Verb Agreement

Subjects and verbs must AGREE with
one another in number (singular or
plural).
If a subject is singular, its verb must
also be singular;
If a subject is plural, its verb must also
be plural.

In the present tense, nouns and verbs form

plurals in opposite ways: nouns ADD an s to the
singular form; verbs REMOVE the s from the
singular form.

TRICK!
TRICK!
1. The subject and verb are separated by several
words
example: The room with the flowers is
absolutely beautiful
2. Collective nouns can be either singular or plural
example:
Singular The group of students is walking to class
Plural The class are tuning their instrument
The class members are tuning their
instrument

3. A plural subject separated by and might

be separated by a lot of words
Example: The Old Store at the corner of the
street that sold delicious muffins and the
building at the far end of the university are
going to be renovated next year.

4. Singular Indefinite Pronouns

5. Plural Indefinite Pronouns

However, the following indefinite pronouns
ALWAYS take plural verbs.

EXCEPTION
A third group of indefinite pronouns takes either a singular or plural
verb depending on the pronouns meaning in the sentence.

All/Some/None of the cake has been eaten

All/Some/None of the pieces have been eaten
Neither the cats not the dogs is here
Either the cats or dog is guilty
Neither the cats not the dogs are here
Either the cat or the dogs are guilty

6. The subject comes after the verb

example:
There is a man in the house
There are a men in the house
Over the hills is an anormous cloud
