Type of Upper Extremity Cast

Shoulder Spica
Used to treat humerus fractures, to
protect soft-tissue injuries about the
shoulder, and in surgical repairs of
the shoulder and proximal humerus.

PLASTER BOLERO
Useful for treating unstable fractures
of the clavicle that require
hyperextension of the two shoulders
to maintain position.
It can also be applied to one
shoulder, incorporating the upper
arm if necessary.

Plaster BOLERO

PLASTER VELPEAU
Used only as a soft-tissue dressing to
immobilize the shoulder or humerus.
When combined with a sugar-tong
splint on the humerus, it is very
effective for immobilizing fractures of
the shaft of the humerus.

Short Arm Cast

The short-arm cast can be used to
immobilize the wrist and the base of
the finger metacarpals for a host of
disorders.
The application of a short-arm cast to
maintain the reduction of a relatively
stable Colles fracture

MUENSTER SHORT-ARM CAST

Used to immobilize the forearm and
wrist when flexion and extension of
the elbow, but limited supination and
pronation, are desired

GAUNTLET CAST
Useful to immobilize fractures of the
metacarpals of the hand and for
minor wrist injuries

THUMB SPICA CAST

Used primarily for fractures of the
scaphoid and other instabilities of the
carpal bones amenable to cast
treatment.
It also is used for fractures involving
all elements of the thumb itself.

Long Arm Cast

The cast is applied from
just below the axilla to
just proximal to the
metacarpophalangeal
joints of the digits but
leaving the thumb free.

Hanging cast
The arm is placed
over the lower chest
with the elbow at 90
degrees.
The top of the
humeral component
of the cast is above
the humeral
fracture.

SPLINTS

U Slab/Humeral Splint
Humerus in line
with body
Elbow at 90
degrees
Palm facing chest
Extent: axilla to
over
acromioclavicular

U Slab/Humeral Splint
Mould over
shoulder for
close fit
Support with
collar and cuff

Gutter Splints
Gutter splints are used for the
treatment of phalangeal and
metacarpal fractures

Thumb Splint
The thumb splint is made by applying
a plaster slab from the tip of the
thumb to approximately two-thirds of
the way along the forearm

Long-Arm Posterior
Splint
A long-arm posterior splint is used to
immobilize a number of injuries to
the elbow and forearm

Sugar Tong Splint

This splint permits
immobilization in
a position of
pronation or
supination without
a circumferential
cast being applied
to the extremity
