WHAT IS FASHION ILLUSTRATION?
TYPES OF ILLUSTRATION
WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?
HOW TO DRAW ILLUSTRATION?

INTRODUCTION
An illustration is a visualization or a depiction of
a subject made by an artist, such as a drawing,
sketch, painting, photograph, or other kind of
image of things seen, remembered or imagined,
using a graphical representation.
The word comes from the latin word illustra'tio
meaning enlighten, irradiate.
The aim of an illustration is to elucidate or
decorate a story, poem or piece of textual
information by providing a visual representation of
something described in the text.

FASHION ILLUSTRATION
Fashion Illustration is the communication of fashion
that originates with illustration, drawing and painting.
Ever since clothes have been in existence, and there
has been a need to translate an idea or image into a
fashion illustration.
Fashion illustrations not only show a representation or
design of a garment but they also serve as a form of
art.
Fashion illustration shows the presence of hand and is
said to be a visual luxury.

TYPES OF ILLUSTRATION
There are three categories in which the
illustrators of fashion can fall into.
1.Sensualists- It appears appears strong and silent
.
2.Gamines and Sophisticates- This type of fashion
illustrator generates imaginary worlds inhibited
by flamboyant personalities.
3.Technocrats- These artists draw but do not finish
off with hand illustration. They digitally
transform their images and work towards the
end computer generated product.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?
Creating rapid fashion illustrations is one of the most
important skills needed for a fashion designer to
convey the themes,
shapes, and textures of their garments in the most
efficient
way possible.
When building an entire collection time is often of
the essence,
so it is essential to accurately represent your ideas
on paper - beautifully - without wasting any effort.

HOW TO DRAW
ILLUSTRATION
In the fashion world, new designs are presented in the form
of hand-drawn sketches before theyre actually cut and
sewn.
First draw a croquis, the model-shaped figure that serves as
the base of the sketch.
The point is not to draw a realistic-looking figure, but a
blank canvas of sorts on which to display illustrations of
dresses,
skirts, blouses, accessories and the rest of your creations.
Adding color and details like ruffles, seams and
buttons helps to bring your ideas to life.

INTRODUCTORY SHEET
Introduction sheet includes the briefing or synopsis
of a particular theme on which designer is working
on.
It includes:
1. Theme
2. Gender
3. Category
4. Occasion
5. Age Group
6. Fabrics
7. Colours
8. Class

MOOD BOARD
Mood boards can be a
great way to convey
your design idea.
When trying to convey
a design idea, moods,
feelings and fluffy stuff
like that are hard to
communicate,
designers will often use
mood boards as
collection of textures,
images and text related
to a design theme as a
reference point.

INSPIRATION BOARD
Inspiration board is basically the collage of
images, words and object that a designer has
collected and wants to organize and keep at hand
as a reference for a project they are working on.

DIFFERENCE IN MOOD AND

INSPIRATION
Mood board: conceptual, feeling, psychology.
Inspiration board: details, colors, forms, texture,
line.
A mood board should influence what goes onto
inspiration board, and the inspiration board should
response to the mood board.
The mood board gathers all the research and
images of how the product will make you feel and
an inspiration board gathers
all the reference points for what the product will
look like.

COLOUR BOARD
Designers create a separate colors board if not a
part of the mood board directly.
The colors are chosen according to the season. The
right colors are chosen from pantone shade cards.

CLIENT BOARD
Creating a customer image and biography
enables a Designer to think more tangibly in
terms of design.
The Client profile contains all detail information
about the client like lifestyle, annual income,
society the client belongs as well as likes and
disliking.

SWATCH/FABRIC BOARD
Selection of fabric is a very important stage. The
designer selects fabric on basis of the season,
and the look of the garment.
The swatch board is a collection of selected fabric
which the Designer consults while designing.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
BOARD
The design development
sheet is like a fashion
sketchbook.
Its a documentation of a Designers thinking
process showing quick drawing skills and use of
color, fabric, accessory ideas, makeup and even
hair styles.
Fabric exploration and surface ornamentation
( embroidery, print, etc) is also finalized.

RANGE BOARD

Best designs from the Design development sheet

are selected to make the final range of garments.
The range can have minimum six to twenty or
even more garments.
The range consists of garments of different types
but will belong to one family in sense of use of
color, fabric or style.

FLATS AND SPECIFICATION

SHEET
The Flats contains technical
details of how the garment
should be stitched.
It is very important for a
fashion designer to render
technical sketches accurately.
Technical drawings of the
garments showing all the
details like measurement, no
of stitches, placement of
trimmings is know as flats or
specs.
Fashion illustration where the
designer sketches a model
wearing his design gives an
idea how the dress will look
when worn by model or client.
