PROJECT PROPOSAL

BLC PLANTATIONS
RECYCLE PALM OIL
FRONDS
PROJECT PRPOSAL
BALACHANDREN NADARAJAH

INTRODUCTION

The world's largest producer and exporter of palm oil

today is Malaysia,
Producing about 47% of the world's supply of palm oil.
Indonesia is the second largest world producer of palm oil
producing approximately 36% of world palm oil
Both nations are expanding their palm oil production
capacity and the market continues to grow. It is estimate
26.2 million tonnes of oil palm fronds istreated as biomass
in Malaysia.
Palm frond consist huge amount of fiber while it can be
transform because the fiber has cellulose in it. Majorly,
fronds are taken from palm oil waste which is usually will
be burn. Cellulose is the major constituent of paper,
textiles and pharmaceutical products.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND

BLC Plantations Sdn Bhd is a company that involved 100% in palm oil
plantation industries. We have 3450 Hectare of plantation land in Sabah.
The brainchild of this project is our Senior Manager En balachandren
who have 25 years experience in the estate.
The main idea is to utilize the waste fronds at the plantation estate to
become more valuable products.
So We have decided to setup one department and a team lead by En Bala
itself to create and setup a factory unit that can recycle back the palm oil
frond into others product optimizing the usage of oil palm residues fiber
based into value-added product.
Purified and partially depolymerised Alfa Cellulose relatively free from
both organic and inorganic contaminants. It is insoluble in water, dilute
acids, common organic solvents and oils. Partially soluble with swelling in
dilute alkali, fine, white, odourless, edible and metabolically inert powder.
It has excellent water absorptive, swelling and dispersion properties
which make it useful for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations,
particularly tablets and capsules

BACKGROUND

CELLULOSE PRODUCTS

Palm frond consist huge amount of fiber

while it can be transform because the fiber
has cellulose in it. Majorly, fronds are
taken from palm oil waste which is usually
will be burn. Cellulose is the major
constituent of paper, textiles and
pharmaceutical products.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Palms

are one of the most well-known and extensively cultivated plant families.
They have had an important role to humans throughout much of history. Many
common products and foods are derived from palms, and palms are also widely
used in landscaping for their exotic appearance making them one of the moste
conomically important plants. Before embarked into identifying the parameters
affecting the overall quality of the fiber, let turn to look into the current utilization
of these fibers.
Recent report shows that the monocarp fiber and shell are used as boiler to
produce steam and to generate power. Whereas, empty fruit bunches are mainly
incinerated to produce
bunch ash to be distributed back to the field as fertilizer (www.freepatentsonline.
com/ 4352341.htm).
The conventional method of burning these residues often create environmental
problems in that it generates severe air pollution and is prohibited by the
Environment Protection Act. In abiding by the regulations, these residues
areBecoming expensive to dispose. Nevertheless, looking on the brighter side of
things,
extensive research has provided us with an alternative way of optimizing the
usage of oil palm residues fiber based into value-added product

OBJECTIVES

The recycling project is to reduce cost on wasted fronds

being used for non-value added activities .
Our goal is to reduce waste by recycling palm oil plant
wide through the below activities :-

1)Established

a team, time line & recycling process flow.

2)Identified Business Units & Workers responsibilities
3)Set-up inventoried System for recycle frond
4)Cost reduction by eliminated waste
5)Documentation on Cost Savings and Finance Approval.
6)Project Ownership.
7)Sustainability of Solution by monitoring the recycling
process flow.

METHODOLOGY

The 4-stages of PDCA Cycle method will be use to address the `problem-faced' and will be drive
through till `problem solved'. The 4-stages Plan-Do-Check-Act, tools and counter measure
indicators derive as per illustrated below.

PROPOSAL SOLUTION

Few crucial factors has been evaluated in proposing solution by reuse

the battery with proper measuring tools. Scoring has been done to
weigh the impacts and ROI. Below here is the propose solution matrix

PROPOSE SOLUTION IMPLEMENTATION
PEOPLE

To produce cellulose from waste biomass

cellulosic material, oil palm frond need a
good and experienced scientist

RECYCLE
MACHINE

Oil Palm Recycling Machine very costing

(USD 50,000 USD 100,000)

QUALITY

To obtained ISO certification and has established a

quality management system that is in compliance
with the internal quality system standard ISO 9001
AND Q 9001-2000.

FINANCIAL

Need to find source of finance to start

up the projects

PROJECT COSTING

Initial setup will be cost in

approximately= RM5 million. Details
breakdown as per below.
LABOUR COST (ALL OPERATIONS) = RM 1.5
MILLION
MACHINE = RM 2.5 MILLION
LABORATORY COST = 1 MILLION

CONCLUSION

It is an agricultural plant, which originates from West Africa

and cultivated in Malaysia for its oil producing fruit. Besides
palm oil, the industry also generates massive amounts of
lignocellulosic residues such as trunks, fronds and the
empty fruit bunches (EFB), with an estimated amount of 30
million tonnes (MPOB, 2001).The suitability of this abundant,
inexpensive and renewable raw material for papermaking
resource has been explored using a variety of useable
products.
Majorly, fronds are taken from palm oil waste which is
usually will be burn. So Mutiara Agro will move forward to
make a change into go green enviroment and at the same
time make a huge profit from the value added product
recyle from waste palm oil fronds.
