REJUVINATION
OF INDIAN
RAILWAY
PLATFORMS

We have considered ALLAHABAD JUNCTION

for our reference which is situated in Uttar
Pradesh, 25.4500 N, 81.8500 E.

Introduction

Indian Railway is one of the world's largest

railway networks comprising 115,000km
(71,000mi) of track over a route of 65,436km
(40,660mi) and 7,172 stations.
In 2014-15, this 161 year old network carried
8.397 billion passengers annually or more than
23 million passengers a day (roughly half of
whom were suburban passengers) and 1050.18
million tons of freight in the year.
Yet ,this network has a lot of problems to be taken
care of.

SANITATION
Present Situation of Platform

Sanitation
Sanitation problems can be dealt by taking
into consideration: Platforms
Tracks
Bogies

What is being done

What can be done

Making a machine which can be used both in

tracks and platforms.
The machine works as a vacuum cleaner but
with a slightly greater pressure.
The vehicle will be a motor driven one.
The battery will drive the motors one leading
to the suction pump and the other to the
wheels plus a major part of it to the suction
pump again for energy efficiency.
When the vacuum is not needed; disengage
the gear to run the vehicle.

Motor 2 has less power ratings than motor 1 & Major portion of
motor 1 output towards creating suction pressure.

Machine:

Specifications:

Suction pressure:-30kPa
Garbage bags capacity:40ltrs
Power consumption:1500 watts
Hose pipe length:1mtr
Hose pipe diameter: around 15cm
Maximum Airflow: 80 L/sec

What can be done

Increasing the capacity of each dustbins

and by increasing the opening area of the
dustbins.
Use of septic tanks for collecting biowastes.

SEATING PROBLEMS
>>PRESENT SITUATION:

How we can solve them

Use of foldable benches.
Use of hoardings which can be used for
sitting.
The hoardings would actually be provided
the companies that want to advertise at the
station with the term that the hoarding can
be used as a bed for 8/10/12 hrs as per
agreement.

LUGGAGE PROBLEMS
Present situation:
>People find it difficult to transport
the luggage from one place to
another.
>The unmanaged luggage also reduce the
space.
>Create difficulties during boarding off or on
the trains.

WHAT CAN BE DONE

Introduction of an additional small

luggage gate near the exit gate of the
train compartment.

The Dimension of the Luggage gate would be around:

70*50 cm^2

>>The luggage gate will provide for a

pathway of luggage which causes problems
for entry as well as exit.
>>The gate will serve as an inclined plane
when open, for the luggage motion.
>>There is a slot from the gate to the
luggage gate so that passengers can keep
track of their luggage.

LACK OF SAFETY
PRESENT SITUATION:
There are a number of accidents because of
passengers crossing the railway tracks with
wrong presumptions.

What can be done.

Use of anti collision device in train
Use of sensors in the tracks that will cause
the barricade opening.

The drum on rotation will cause the raising of barricades

similar to a simple slider crank mechanism.

When the train approaches the stations the

sensors on the tracks will get activated which will
complete the circuit and cause the motor to start
and cause the rotation of the drum that would
eventually lead to the raising of the barricades.
The sensors also activate the lights near the
platforms to make passengers aware about the
incoming train.
The circuit is such that the light glows 30 sec.
before the barricades raise.

Additional things that can be

done:

Use of solar plates in the roofs of the

platforms to reduce power costs like
Aburoad and Bhilwara railway stations in
Rajasthan.

Energy thus obtained can be used to light up platforms, for this we

shall use cadmium telluride solar panels with a temperature
coefficient of 0.25.
