Heart Shaped Box

Artist: Nirvana
Producer: Steven Albini of Electrical
Audio
Director: Anton Corbijn
Production Company: It was produced
under the Nirvana and Anton Corbijn
names.
Record Label(s): Sub Pop, DGC.
What makes it successful: Its
symbolism and controversial themes.

Target Audience: Male and female teens due to

its genre and tone.
Narritive: The songs lyrics are derived from a
present from Courtney Love to Kurt Cobain. The
video starts and ends with the band in a
hospital setting watching an old man using an
IV drip. Most of the video takes place in a
wizard of Oz styled field. During the first verse
the old man wears a Christmas hat and climbs
onto a Christian cross. The second verse shows
a young girl in a white robes resembling that of
the racist group named the KKK reaching for
human foetuses in a tree, a woman in a suit
with human organs painted onto it and with
angel wings on her back.

Cinematography
Camera Work Examples: Wide shots, close
up of Kurt Swinging his head in and out of
focus, the main transition used is a flash cut,
I believe that the saturation has been turned
up to make the flowers and yellow floor pop
Mise-en-scene: the main focus is on an old
man dressed as Jesus and a little girl in KKK
robes. The lighting is full and bright on the
focus's of the shots. The acting is simple but
I believe this was by design to portray the
not caring attitude.

Subterranean Home Sick

Blues

Artist: Bob Dylan

Producer: Columbia Records
Director: Bob Dylan
Production Company: Columbia Records
Record Label: Columbia Records
What makes it successful: It was one of
the first music videos. Filmed before the
term music video was invented it has
been parodied many times

Target audience: fans of country and

all ages.
Narritive: There is no narrative as the
idea for the promotional film was
thought of by Dylan and the people
he was touring with at the time
thought it would be good publicity so
they filmed it.

Cinematography
Camera Work: the video is always of a full
shot of Dylan holding the cards with words
on them. The video is in black and white
due to the era it was filmed in. Only a
simple cut is used
Mise-en-scene: Dylan is seen wearing
various outfits e.g the coat he wears on
the cover of The Free Wheelin Bob Dylan
and holding the cards with the lyrics on
them.

the video is of the three band

wearing all black body suits on a
black floor. The camera is placed
above to make it appear they are
flying.

Cinematography
Camera Work: The whole video is a
wide full shot of the band members.
Mise-en-scene: the band members
are wearing casual suits, the rest of
the cast are wearing full body black
