Methods of
recruitment

One way of recruitment is through national press. Nation press uses local newspapers to advertise job roles that people may be
looking for.

Another way for recruitment is through trade press. Trade press is are subscription based magazines where they often advertise jobs,
depending on the type of magazine they are. For this specific topic, since the magazine is for the media/TV/film industry they would
advertise jobs related to that.

The last way of recruitment is through the internet. The internet is a good way to look for jobs as its a platform in where companies can
easily advertise a job role they need to be filled in, where its short term or long term jobs with or without pay.

Methods of recruitment
Word of mouth: Word of mouth recruitments are often employees being recruited through
referrals or recommendations through a mutual contact. This kind of recruitment is very handy
for freelancers to find work because theres a higher chance to get employed.
Personal contact: Personal contact is a recruitment through people that you know, and may
have worked with before. Normally personal contact can be made through networking with
other people.
Networking: Networking online is very important for freelancers to find jobs. As the Internet is
very accessible, a lot of job roles can be found here. Through networking you can find out
information about the job role, the company that you may be working for and keep contact
with future employers.

Creative skillset- jobs

On Creative Skillset, they can help people find the job roles that they are interested in and
they also touch on the different ways to get in the job, what is required and what the job
entails. Example of a small part of the job list:

Creative Skillset- jobs

I looked on Creative Skillset to research more about the job that I wanted to get into- Concept Artist.

You can study an arts school course with a focus on draughting

skills, graphics and conceptualising ideas e.g., fine art, graphics,
illustration etc. However, there is no formal training or qualification
for this job.
There is no typical career route to becoming a Concept Artist. You
could start off as a Graphic Artist, Illustrator or Graphic Novelist.
Otherwise, you can work in special or visual effects or animation
and make the transition to Concept Artist via storyboarding.

Portfolio
http://racheltsemedia.weebly.com/unit-30--advertisement-for-television.html
This is a link to one of my units that I have done within the past years. On this page it shows the process of
how the production project came to be, and highlights the importance of the process in order to carry out a
professional final production. For example, it start with the research of what adverts are and why they are
made. Then it goes onto market research of the brand so I can find out what the brands history is, the
SWOT, who their demographic is that theyre targeting- so that I can create a product that would be true to
the brand. Within the pre-production it also shows the brainstorming, the initial ideas, refining and
developing that idea, planning the idea, carrying out the logistics and then into the final production.

Personal CV

Self skills
Along with using my body language I can also use visual aids like props, objects and examples relevant to what Im going to say.
For example, in my pitch for the Lego advertisement, I had worn a formal blazer and shirt to present myself in a professional
way, as my client would take me more seriously. I had used a visual element (my presentation) to aide me in my pitch, as I had
subtle hints of what I was going to say in case I had forgotten. For example, I was talking about the history of the brand, Lego, so
I created a visual timeline with the dates I wanted to mention just in case I had forgotten midway through presenting. I moved
around quite a bit, often pointing to the board to point out the focus of what I am talking about. For example if I was explaining
the SWOT analysis of Lego and I was talking about the strengths, I would be pointing at the word strength on my slide, just for
some emphasis. Although I had tried my best to be confident, in the way I had postured myself and my tone of voice,
unfortunately I was very nervous and had ended up using a lot of fillers such as uhm, errr etc. which is the paralanguage
which wouldnt make the oral presentation as professional, as it seemed as if I didnt know what I was talking about. (Oral
presentation)
I felt that I have presented leadership skills in setting up the graphics for that nights graphic assistant as I had arrived early. I
had set up the graphics on QLab to be projected onto the vision mixer. There were problems with QLab sometimes not being
able to read the footage being put on there, so I had to make a new QLab file and put in the graphics in order again. I had less
practice on the lighting, however I felt that I was more confident in the job role because I mainly went with gut instinct. I
learned how to install sequences of lights, how to create chasers, how to fade out the lights and how to change the effects of
the lights (using buttons like forward, backward, bounce and random). I didnt have a lighting script to follow so I improvised on
the timing of the lighting and which sequences/chaser to use based on the music and performance. In the studio we learned
how to crab the camera left and right, and did...

Self skills
...a mini rehearsal/practice taking turns on the camera (with assistants where they held the extra wires), vision mixer, director,
graphics etc. We also practiced tilting and zooming the cameras onto a person walking up and down the room to get a feel of
what it would be like in the actual show. I also had experience with cameras in previous units where I had to film, for example
the Advertising unit where I had to film my own advert. Although I learned how to use the camera, I didnt learn how to crab or
set up the bigger cameras. We also learned how to prepare for the fashion show, set up the cameras, the names of the
cables/equipment (3 pin XLR, composite cable, BNC cable, talkbacks, tally light etc.), connecting the cables etc. (From the
fashion show)
Training/DevelopmentAs the job that I have chosen was a Concept Artist, based on Creative Skillsets site, there isnt any specific training or typical
career route to get into the job. The job entails for the person to have the creativeness, passion and abilities for art and design
and generally they would gain these by going through an art school. They may major in Fine Arts, Animation, Illustrations etc.
but most importantly they would also need a portfolio to enter into the job.
For me, I would graduate sixth form and go into a University or Art College to major in an art course (Illustration in my case).
During my time in University/College I will be developing my portfolio and skills and perhaps increasing my connections
through networking through tutors.

Jobs that I could apply to

I chose this job to apply to because
compared to the other storyboard
artist job, this had much more of a
detailed explanation of the job and
what it entails, plus what kind of
production they are doing. I also
chose this compared to the concept
artist/illustrator job (even though it
is my ideal job) because I feel that
with my current skills it wouldnt be
possible for me to apply as I do not
have a proper portfolio with
illustration work. On the other hand I
have experience and portfolio work
of storyboarding.

Application
Dear Sir/Madam,
I would like to apply for the position of a storyboarder as advertised in mandy.com. I would love to partake visualising the plot
with your team with my artistic skills. I have education in Graphics Communication and BTEC Media Studies for two years, and
I like to practice my drawing skills within my spare time as well. Next year I am also looking forward to enhancing my education
through Ravensbourne College in the Arts and Design foundation, but most of all I am a passionate in arts and am keen to take
this further with this job.
Should I be shortlisted, I am able to bring a portfolio with previous storyboard work that I have produced throughout the two
years of my media course and in my spare time as part of my own interest. I am more than willing to answer any questions that I
have not covered in this application.
Yours faithfully, Rachel Tse.
