ADVANTAGES OF PRECAST FLOOR SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION
PRECAST floor system is an
arrangement in which the floor slab is not
cast in-situ
(freshly cast on
site).
Its designed as a reinforced concrete
structure.

PREPARATION
The
mould MUST be well scraped/ clean
before lubrication.
No space SHOULD be left unbolt to avoid
loss of cement slurry.

ADVANTAGES

PROCESS/PRODUCT CONSISTENCY:
By producing it in a controlled environment, the precast concrete is afforded the
opportunity to properly cure and be monitored by factory personnel.

SAFETY:
It enhances the safety index of construction as the production is done in a safer
environment than site conditions.

QUALITY ASSURANCE:
There is greater control of the quality of the materials and workmanship in a precast
factory than on a construction site.

COST:
The formwork or moulds used in precast concrete suspended floor production can be
re-used several times over. This means that the cost of formwork is far lower than for
site casting. Quantities of concrete and steel are also reduced resulting in lower
overall costs.

ADVANTAGES

CONTD

VOLUME OF CONCRETE/WEIGHT OF STRUCTURE :

the volume of concrete is low, reinforcement is reduced and the
overall weight of the building is lower.
SPEED:
It is a much faster method of construction as the time delay caused by
the waiting period of in-situ casting is avoided.
WASTE PRODUCTION:
Waste of materials on site is avoided adding to the cost effectiveness
of the system.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
It is an environmentally friendly method of construction as it reduces
the demand for timber for construction thereby preserving our forests.

EXPERIENCED GAINED
I was exposed to practical aspect of building
construction which strip arrangement of building,
production of load bearing blocks, brick-laying, iron
bending etc.
I was taught reinforced concrete design of ribbed slab
using computer based software packages such as
Orion and staadPRO.
I was exposed to Dam-Dem arrangement of
building( a new concept of mass housing delivery)
developed by Prof. OLUMIDE OLUSANYA of the
Department of Architecture, University of Lagos.

CHALLENGES FACED
During the program, the following are the
challenges faced among others:
Accommodation problem
Short period of industrial training
Transportation problem
Incessant power supply etc.
