Presentation we shall
look at What is a
confined space,
procedures, monitors
and escape sets.

The purpose of the

confned space entry
program is to:

Purpose of the Confined Space

Ensure there is consistency when

performing this job to prevent
personal injury to employees and
property damage to equipment.

Ensure the safety of personnel

working in or around confined
spaces.
Establish an entry and permit
procedure to ensure that hazards
associated with confined spaces
are recognized and addressed
prior to entry.

What is a Confined Space

A confined space as defined

by MCM-SAF-002-CSE is any
space that has the following
characteristics:
Is large enough
and so
configured that
a person can
bodily enter
and perform
assigned work.

Has limited or
restricted
means for
entry or exit.

Is not designed
for continuous
human
occupancy.

Classifications

MCM-SAF-002-CSE has two confined space classification levels

Confined Space Level A

Confined Space Level B

Confined Space Level A

A confined space that has one (1) or more of the following characteristics:

Contains or has a
potential to contain
a hazardous
atmosphere
(atmospheric)

Contains a material
that has the
potential for
engulfing an
entrant
(engulfment).

Has an internal
configuration such
that an entrant
could be trapped or
asphyxiated by
inwardly
converging walls or
by a floor that
slopes downward
and tapers to a
smaller crosssection
(entrapment).

Contains any other

recognized serious
safety or health
hazard.

Confined Space Level B

A confined space that does not contain hazards capable of causing death or
serious physical harm and does not have the potential to contain
atmospheric hazards capable of causing death or serious physical harm.

The main difference with regard to procedures are;

Entrants will be allowed to exit without signing on
the permit for a time period of five (5) minutes or
less and no more than two (2) Entrants will be
allowed to exit at the same time without signing
out on the entry permit.

Escape Sets may not be necessary if ventilation is

adequate.
