C7 (p.188)

Learning outcomes (p.190)

7.1.3 Determine the sample space of an
experiment.
7.1.4 Write the sample space by using set
notations.

Sample space (p.188)

Sample space: A set consisting of all the possible
outcomes of an event. The sample space is denoted by
the letter S.
Example:
When we toss a coin, we get head or tails. Heads or tails
are the two possible outcomes of tossing a coin. So, the
sample space can be written as S = {heads, tails}.
When a dice is rolled, the sample space can be written as
S = {1,2,3,4,5,6}.

Example 3 (p.190)
List the sample space for the sexes of children of 2-child
family.
Solution:
Let B = boy and G = girl.
The sample space S = {BB, BG,
GB,
Sex
B
G

GG}
B
BB
GB

G
BG
GG

Exercise 7.1B (p.191)

List the sample space for each of the following
experiments.
1. Twirling a square spinner labelled W, X, Y, Z.
2. There are 3 History books, 7 Science books and 5
Geography books on a shelf. A book is chosen from the
shelf.
3. A ball is picked from a bag consisting of 5 black, 2
orange, 4 brown and 1 blue balls.
4. A coin is tossed twice.
5. Rolling a dice and tossing a coin simultaneously.

Exercise 7.1B (p.191)

List the sample space for each of the following
experiments.
1. Twirling a square spinner labelled W, X, Y, Z.
Sample space, S = {W, X, Y, Z}

Exercise 7.1B (p.191)

experiments.
2. There are 3 History books, 7 Science books and 5
Geography books
on a shelf. A book is chosen from the shelf.
Sample space, S = {History, Science, Geography}

Exercise 7.1B (p.191)

experiments.
2. A ball is picked from a bag consisting of 5 black, 2
orange, 4 brown
and 1 blue balls.
Sample space, S = {black, orange, brown, blue}

Exercise 7.1B (p.191)

List the sample space for each of the following
experiments.
4. A coin is tossed twice.
Sample space, S = {(Head, Head), (Head, Tail), (Tail,
Head), (Tail, Tail)}

Exercise 7.1B (p.191)

List the sample space for each of the following
experiments.
5. Rolling a dice and tossing a coin simultaneously.
Sample space, S = {(1, Head), (2, Head), (3, Head),
