Quoted speech and reported speech


1. Quoted speech = direct speech uses the
exact words of the speaker and quotation
marks .
- Jennifer said I like birthday cake
2. Reported speech = indirect speech
doesnt use the exact words of speaker
and quotation marks.
- Jennifer said (that) she liked birthday cake.

I. When we report what somebody says we make


the following changes.
1.
Change the pronouns and possessive
adjectives, because a different person is now
speaking.
Pronouns ( who ? Whom ?) I, you, me, him,
myself...
Possessive adjectives ( whose ?)
my, your, his, our...

5. Reporting conditionals
Verb tenses dont change in unreal or unlikely
conditional statements. ( condition type 2 and 3)
ex:1. If you had told me sooner about your birthday, we
could have had a party, said Paul
Paul said If I had told him sooner about my birthday,
we could have had a party.
Ex.2. If I were a better cook, I would make dinner for you
myself
Paul said If he were a better cook, he would make
dinner for me himself.
