NSN approach to LTE

Nokia Siemens Networks offers a comprehensive LTE

end-to-end Solution to provide an smooth and cost-efficient

network deployment of LTE networks, consisting of:
- functionalities in the new LTE radio access network
- corresponding features in the existing network
infrastructure
- portfolio of services

Nokia Siemens Networks LTE Radio Solution is based on

the Flexi Multimode BTS, facilitating a smooth upgrade

path from WCDMA/HSPA, as it can be upgraded to support
LTE via software download only.

Flexi Multimode Base Station will become available on all

3GPP-bands, subject to market demand and will support
concurrent operation for WCDMA/HSPA and LTE on the
same HW platform.

NSN approach to LTE

Nokia Siemens Networks offers state-of-the-art site systems
for co-existence of GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and
LTE equipment in same location, building on the
revolutionary Flexi Base Station architecture for multiple
radio access technologies

Planning and optimization of LTE, WCDMA and GSM

networks specifically in frequency refarming cases is

simplified with Nokia Siemens Networks NetAct network
management tools.

Nokia Siemens Networks is the most experienced vendor in

the industry for LTE systems, having demonstrated the first

LTE e2e calls already in 2006 and field-trial deployments of
LTE in multi-user environments in 2007 and has been
selected together with Panasonic Mobile Communications as
supplier to NTT DoCoMos Super-3G (LTE) project in Japan.

Nokia Siemens Networks is a driving force in the LSTI (LTE

System & Test initiative)

Flexi Network Server 1.0 : Product Concept

Flexi Network Server Release 1.0 and 1.0 CD2

introduces MME control plane functionality to be used as

a part of the NSN LTE offering.
In the first phase Flexi NS is positioned as a stand alone
MME element.
However, evolution to a flat architecture 3G SGSN is
considered as a natural evolution step in the future.
Evolution to become 2G SGSN is more difficult, since
user plane forwarding would be needed in that
environment.
Flexi NS will be based on NSN ATCA* hardware
platform, and build on top of the NSN combi SGSN SW
architecture. The idea is that the MME functionality
developed in NS1.0 release can be later integrated as a
part of the combi SGSN.
The product name Flexi Network Server is still
provisional.

Up to ten times faster mobile broadband data rates

a step closer to reality

Together with Nokia Siemens Networks, Panasonic

Mobile Communications is selected by NTT
DoCoMo to be their Super 3G / Long Term Evolution
vendor

Nokia Siemens Networks has completed the

worlds first multi-user field trial in an urban
environment using the new Long Term Evolution
(LTE) technology that offers mobile data rates up to
173 Megabits per second.
In recent years the wireless industry has made a series
of progressive improvements in the performance.
However, end users now make increased use of mobile
multimedia services and they stay online for longer
periods. They therefore require faster data rates,
quicker response times and longer battery life in order
to enjoy the benefits of services such as voice over IP,
mobile video, sharing and collaboration and rich
multimedia telephony.
One year ago Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the
worlds first LTE demonstration in conjunction with
MIMO (Multiple Input / Multiple Output) antenna
technology. In this demonstration peak data rates
of 160 Megabits per second were
realized.

Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd and Nokia

Siemens Networks have agreed to cooperate on LTE
base station products. The companies jointly
responded to the request by Japans biggest mobile
operator NTT DoCoMo, Inc. for its Super 3G(LTE) Base
Station project, and Panasonic Mobile Communications
was selected as a supplier.
LTE is the next generation system for mobile networks
like GSM, WCDMA/HSPA and CDMA. It improves the
delivery of new multimedia and rich call applications by
enhancing data transfer speeds, reducing latency and
building on a scalable flat network design.
Panasonic Mobile Communications has developed
WCDMA base stations for over ten years based on
NTT DoCoMos requirements and has delivered
equipment for the operators FOMA TM network.

Nokia Siemens Networks announces its end-to-end

solution for Long Term Evolution

Nokia Siemens Networks Ready for LTE in North

America

Nokia Siemens Networks solution helps mobile

operators meet the demands for high data speeds and
capacity beyond 3G with the industrys smoothest
upgrade to Long Term Evolution (LTE) / System
Architecture Evolution (SAE) networks.

Nokia Siemens Networks provides Long Term Evolution

(LTE) for 700 MHz and 1.7/2.1 GHz spectrum bands in
North America.

At the Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona,

Nokia Siemens Networks today launched its LTE
solution for radio and core networks, including the new
Flexi Multimode Base Station, Mobility Management
Entity (MME) and System Architecture Evolution (SAE)
Gateway.
Nokia Siemens Networks LTE solution is well suited for
new operators and for operators upgrading existing
GSM/WCDMA/HSPA networks to provide fast and lowdelay Internet services via mobile broadband. LTE will
provide joint evolution for both 3GPP and 3GPP2
operators, which makes LTE a true global roaming
technology.

56
Nokia Siemens Networks

Nokia Siemens Networks LTE solution for radio and

core networks will enable operators to deploy
WCDMA/HSPA and LTE in all major frequency bands,
including the 700 MHz and 1.7/2.1 GHz bands that are
of particular importance in North America. The solution
is comprised of the new Flexi Multimode Base Station,
Mobility Management Entity (MME) and System
Architecture Evolution (SAE) Gateway. The Flexi
Multimode Base Station is the newest member of the
small, modular and energy-efficient Flexi Base Station
family, making full use of the software defined radio
concept, which simplifies the path to LTE.
License winners from auctions in the U.S. and Canada
will be eager to deploy new networks and services as
quickly as possible, said Sue Spradley, President,
Nokia Siemens Networks, North America.

NSN is driving LTE commercialization

Press Release
London, United Kingdom, April 14, 2008
Wireless Industry Leaders commit to framework for
LTE technology IPR licensing
Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, NEC, NextWave Wireless,
Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks and Sony Ericsson
have today announced a mutual commitment to a
framework for establishing predictable and more
transparent maximum aggregate costs for licensing
intellectual property rights (IPR) that relate to 3GPP
Long Term Evolution and Service Architecture Evolution
standards (LTE/SAE). The companies invite all
interested parties to join this initiative which is intended
to stimulate early adoption of mobile broadband
technology across the communications and consumer
electronic industries.
The framework is based on the prevalent industry
principle of fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory
(FRAND) licensing terms for essential patents. This
means that the companies agree, subject to reciprocity,
to reasonable, maximum aggregate royalty rates based
on the value added by the technology in the end
product and to flexible licensing arrangements
according to the licensors proportional share of all
standard essential IPR for the relevant product
category.
