Nagarahole is named after Nagarahole (Cobra river in the local
language, Kannada), a winding river which runs eastwards through
its centre. Situated in the two districts of Mysore and Kodagu in the
state of Karnataka. It was originally constituted into a sanctuary in
the year 1955 covering an area of 258 sq. Kms and subsequently
enlarged to include the adjoining areas of Mysore district and now
extends over an area of 643.39 sq. kms which was given the status
of a National Park in 1983.
The birth of Nagarahole National Park can be traced to the
notification of 285 Sq. km. Game Reserve way back in 1955, which
included the reserve forests of Arkeri, Hatgat and Nalkeri in Kodagu.
Subsequently, in 1974, reserved forests from the adjoining Mysore
district were added to the Nagarahole Game Reserve, which was
upgraded to the status of a National Park covering 643 sq. km.

CHIPKO MOVEMENT

CHIPKO MOVEMENT

In the 1970s, an organized resistance to the destruction of forests

spread throughout India and came to be known as the Chipko
movement. The name of the movement comes from the word
'embrace', as the villagers hugged the trees, and prevented the
contractors' from felling them.
Not many people know that over the last few centuries many
communities in India have helped save nature. One such is the
Bishnoi community of Rajasthan. The original Chipko movement
was started around 260 years back in the early part of the 18th
century in Rajasthan by this community. A large group of them from
84 villages led by a lady called Amrita Devi laid down their lives in
an effort to protect the trees from being felled on the orders of the
Maharaja (King) of Jodhpur. After this incident, the maharaja gave a
strong royal decree preventing the cutting of trees in all Bishnoi
villages.

BEGNNING OF CHIPKO
MOVEMENT

20th century, it began in the hills where the forests are the main source of
livelihood, since agricultural activities cannot be carried out easily. The
Chipko movement of 1973 was one of the most famous among these. The
first Chipko action took place spontaneously in April 1973 in the village of
Mandal in the upper Alakananda valley and over the next five years spread
to many districts of the Himalayas in Uttar Pradesh. It was sparked off by
the government's decision to allot a plot of forest area in the Alaknanda
valley to a sports goods company. This angered the villagers because their
similar demand to use wood for making agricultural tools had been earlier
denied. With encouragement from a local NGO (non-governmental
organization), DGSS (Dasoli Gram Swarajya Sangh), the women of the
area, under the leadership of an activist, Chandi Prasad Bhatt, went into the
forest and formed a circle around the trees preventing the men from cutting
them down.
The success achieved by this protest led to similar protests in other parts of
the country. From their origins as a spontaneous protest against logging
abuses in Uttar Pradesh in the Himalayas, supporters of the Chipko
movement, mainly village women, have successfully

BHARATPUR NATIONAL PARK

Home to over 300 species of birds, Keoladeo Ghana National Park

popularly known as Bharatpur National Park, is situated near
Bharatpur in eastern Rajasthan. The park lies between two of Indias
tourism centres Agra and Jaipur about 190 km from Delhi.
Keoladeo is just two km from the erstwhile royal capital of Bharatpur,
termed as the Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan. Founded in 1733 AD
by Maharaja Suraj Mal, the place was named Bharatpur after
Bharat, younger brother of Lord Ram.
Spread over an area of 29 sq km, the park derives its name from the
ancient temple dedicated to Keoladeo located at the centre of the
park. Ghana means dense and refers to the thick forest, which
covered the area. About 11 sq km of the park is marsh land and the
rest comprises of scrub-land and grassland.

BISHNOI MOVEMENT

The Bishnoi faith is a religious offshoot of Hinduism founded on 29

principles, most of which promote environmental stewardship. Bishnois
strictly forbid the harming of trees and animals. The religion was founded by
Guru Maharaj Jambaji in 1485 AD in the Marwar (Jodhpur) desert region of
western Rajasthan, India. Jambaji witnessed the incessant clear-cutting of
trees during times of drought to feed animals, only to see them die
eventually as the drought continued. He also recognized the importance of
trees within his local ecosystem (keeping animals alive) and banned cutting
down green trees and killing birds or animals. Jambaji's spiritual reverence
for nature led to a tradition of harmony with the local ecology: in the middle
of an arid desert region, the Bishnois are famous for cultivating lush
vegetation, caring for animals, and collecting drinkable water.
In 1730, almost 300 years after Guru Jambaji's 29 principles were recorded,
the maharajah (king) of Jodhpur wanted to build a new palace. He sent
soldiers to gather wood from the forest region near the village of Khejarli,
where Bishnoi villagers had helped foster an abundance of khejri (acacia)
trees. When the king's men began to harm the trees, the Bishnois protested
in anguish but were ignored by the soldiers, who were under royal orders.

KANHA NATIONAL PARK

The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines of
Kanha provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel
"Jungle Book". The Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh came
into being in 1955 and forms the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve,
created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The Park's landmark
achievement is the preservation of the rare hardground Swamp
Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near extinction. Stringent
conservation programs for the overall protection of the Park's fauna
and flora, makes Kanha one of the most well maintained National
Parks in Asia.
A heightened attraction within the Park is Bamni Dadar, popularly
known as Sunset Point that offers the most awe-inspiring backdrop
of the sunset against grazing Sambhars and Gaurs, magnifying the
natural splendor of the area. Aside from its diverse wildlife and bird
population, the frequent
