DISASTER
Adisasteris
anaturalormanmadehazardthat has come to fruition,
resulting in an event of substantial extent
causing significant physical damage or
destruction, loss of life, or drastic change
to thenatural environment.
A disaster can be definedas Any tragic
event with great loss stemming from
events
such
asearthquakes,floods,
catastrophic
accidents,fires,
orexplosions
CLASSIFICATION
Natural
Man-made
Anatural disasteris the effect of anatural
hazard.(e.g.,flood,tornado,hurricane,volcani
c eruption,earthquake, orlandslide).
A
Man-made
disastersaredisastersresulting from manmadehazards(threats having an element of
human intent, involving a failure of a manmade system.etc), as opposed tonatural
disastersresulting fromnatural hazards.
DISASTER MITIGATION
Disaster mitigation is any action
taken to eliminate or minimize the
impact of a disaster on people,
property and the environment.
Earthquake
Hurricane.
Landslide.
Flood.
Tsunami.
Storm surge.
Avalanche.
Heat.
Earthquake:
Tsunami:
A tsunami is a giant wave of water which
rolls into the shore of an area with a
height of over 15 m (50 ft).
Tsunami can be caused by undersea
earthquakes as in the 2004 Indian
Ocean.
Earthquake by landslides such as the one
which occurred at Latoya Bay, Alaska.

TYPES OF FAULTS
Normal Fault.
Thrust Fault.
Strike-slip Fault.
Left-Lateral strikeslip Fault.
Right-Lateral
Strike-Slip Fault.
IMPORTANT BUILDING
CHARACTERISTICS
Height of buildings:
The higher the
building the higher
natural period to
complete frequency of
the earthquake wave
needed
Ductility:
Ductility can be defined as the ability to
undergo distortion or deformation (bending)
without resulting in complete breakage or
failure.
Damping:
Damping can be defined as the force
(absorption of energy) by structural elements
to stop the horizontal vibration of building
Energy Dissipation
Devices:
Friction dampers.
Metallic dampers.
Visco-elastic dampers.
Viscous dampers.
