Mitosis and

The Cell Cycle

Objective: Define and explain the Cell Cycle. Define its

phases and explain the key events that occur during
each phase.

DO NOW: THINK OF AT LEAST TWO

REASONS WHY CELLS NEED TO DIVIDE.

All multicellular organisms grow

through mitosis
Large, carnivorous
dinosaurs like T-Rex and
Tarbosaurus took about 18
years to grow to full size.
This means they gained
about 4.5 pounds a day!
Thats a lot of mitosis!

The Cell Cycle

INTERPHASE

During interphase the cell grows and duplicates its DNA.

Cells spend about 90% of their lives in interphase.

MITOSIS

During mitosis, cells divide to make two identical copies of

themselves.

Cells spend about 10% of their lives doing mitosis.

Math connection: If a cell lives for 20

days, how many days would it spend
doing mitosis?

What is interphase?
A phase during which cells grow, develop
and perform their functions.
At the end of interphase, a cell will have
duplicated its DNA and grown much larger,
this will allow it to perform mitosis.

What happens during Interphase?

Cells grow
Dna
duplicates
Then, cells
grow even
more!

Say it as fast as you can!

Interphase, interphase
Body cells grow
DNA duplicates
Then it grows some more

What is mitosis?
A process in which a Eukaryotic cell divides
to produce two identical daughter cells.

Uses of Mitosis
Repair and Heal: Multicellular
organisms use mitosis to heal
wounds and repair damaged
tissue.
Asexual reproduction.
Unicellular Eukaryotes (Fungi
and Protists) use it to
reproduce.
Growth and development.
Multicellular organisms grow
by making more body cells.

Repair and Heal

Through mitosis, new

skin is made as this
injury slowly heals.

Asexual Reproduction
Yeast is a type of
unicellular Fungi
used to make bread.
Here we see yeast
using mitosis to
reproduce.

Growth and Development

These mushrooms are multicellular

Fungi that are using mitosis to grow.

Video time!
We will now watch a video on the cell cycle and mitosis.
There is A LOT of information on this video, so pay close
attention.
As you watch, fill in the blanks in the paragraph in your
graphic organizer.

When a cell undergoes mitosis it creates two

_____________ cells.
The phase when cells are not dividing is
called________________.
Cells are on interphase ______% of the time, they only
do mitosis_____ % of the time.

Why do cells grow and duplicate their DNA during
interphase?
What are the three functions of mitosis?

OBJECTIVE: Name and describe the four phases

of mitosis and the key events of each phase.

interphase?

Cancer cells
When mitosis
malfunctions and cells
reproduce unchecked,
they begin to form a
tumor.
A malignant tumor can
spread to other parts of
the body.
