RF sharing GSM LTE

Introduction

Flexi Multiradio BTS is a common HW platform to be used for different

access technologies: GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, LTE

Radio access functionality is shifted from dedicated HW to dedicated SW
Radio Modules (RFM/RRH) can transmit and receive multicarrier signals of
multiple radio technologies concurrently
Each RMs branch (pipe) can support several carriers (frequency blocks for

WCDMA/LTE and virtual TRXs in case of GSM/EDGE) within the available RMs
bandwidth or the bandwidth can be shared between different technologies
Different technologies share the same RF Power amplifiers within one band
The output power of the RF power amplifiers is split between the RATs

Introduction

There are different working modes of Flexi Multiradio BTS

Dedicated Mode

Each technology has its own Radio Resources (e.g. RFM) connected to
the System Module
Each technology can operate in different frequency band
Each technology has its own antenna system connected to the dedicated
Radio Resources

Antenna feeder cables can be shared using Diplexers

RF sharing GSM LTE

Introduction

There are different working modes of Flexi Multiradio BTS

Concurrent Mode

Radio Resources (e.g. RFM) are shared between technologies (different

RATs in the same frequency band)
Single antenna system is used for all the RATs sharing the same Radio
Resources
Dedicated SW features need to be
used to enable RM sharing between
different technologies

Feature details

Hardware requirements, Remote Radio Head

Remote Radio Head (RRH) is optimized to support single sector with 2
RX and 2 TX diversity (2x2 MIMO)
RRH consists of two individual radio branches (pipes) designed to
transmit and receive multicarrier signals of multiple radio technologies
Each pipe supports 1 x TX path and 1 x RX path
RRH is optimized for feederless site usage:
Integrated over voltage protection class 2 in the DC-input
No support for MHAs
Natural cooling (no fan)
FHxA RRH variants are WCDMA & LTE & GSM capable

MCPA Multi Carrier

Power Amplifier
Network Engineering

RF sharing GSM LTE

Feature details
Flexi MR BTS - TX output
power
The nominal output power at the antenna connector is equal to:
60 W for the 3-sector RFM (60W per branch (pipe))
40 W for single sector RRH (40W per branch (pipe))

The nominal output power at each branch (pipe) is the maximum

cumulated sum of output powers of all the carriers (TRXs) within that
branch
The output power per carrier of a radio branch decreases with the
increasing number of carriers in the radio branch
In the concurrent mode the total output power of RFM/RRH is shared
between radio technologies:
GSM / LTE 40W / 20W or GSM / LTE 20W / 40W
GSM / WCDMA 40W / 20W or GSM / WCDMA 20W / 40W

Then the output power dedicated to each technology is distributed among

defined carriers (GSM) or limited according to installed license
(WCDMA/LTE)
Maximum output power per carrier is finally determined by the number of
defined carriers

RF sharing GSM LTE

O&M aspects

Flexi MR BTS in the concurrent mode is seen as two

separate logical network elements with common radio
resources

RFM and antenna lines are shared

In the concurrent mode both system
modules must be synchronized
together
Each module has its own power
supply
Both system modules can feed the
power to the RFM
Each radio technology has
dedicated logical backhaul
connections (Abis and S1) to radio
controllers and servers (from each
logical network element)

18
Nokia Siemens Networks

Network Engineering

RF sharing GSM LTE

O&M aspects
Configuration
management

Each RAT specific SM sets up own

O&M interface and mediates

separately via own mediator with
NetAct management system
The topology handling for shared
resources works independently of
each other LTE and GSM
systems take care of the objects,
topology parameters and reporting
themselves
Configuration management is done
for each RAT independently,
according to rules already defined
for each technology
There are separate BTS element
managers used for LTE and GSM
NEs

For internal use

19
Nokia Siemens Networks

Network Engineering

RF sharing GSM LTE

O&M aspects
Configuration
management
From the operation point of view both collocated System
Modules have different role: Master and Slave
Master System Module acts as synchronization master, link and radio

master for shared RF

The sync master provides BTS site level system clock,
synchronization to the sync slave SM, and Ethernet connection
towards the sync slave SM
The radio master acts as a radio master for shared RM(s) and is
responsible for the configuration of shared and own resources in the
shared RM(s)
Master System Module controls the download and activation of SW in
shared Radio Modules and handles BTS level recovery based on
alarm notifications, which are received from the shared RM(s)
In the configuration with shared radio resources LTE System Module
is always the Master
For internal use
20
Nokia Siemens Networks

Network Engineering

RF sharing GSM LTE

O&M aspects
Configuration
management
The synchronization master and radio masters shall be
defined during commissioning procedure
Commissioning of both NEs: GSM and LTE is done using the
same and common SCF (Site Configuration File)
The SCF contains RAT specific data and shared configuration data
The shared configuration data is activated trough Master System

Module
Common RF parameters can be modified and downloaded to RF
equipment via Master radio access technology (RAT)
Changes in shared resources are visible in both RATs
Both System Modules may support Autoconnection (according to
RAT dependent releases) and shall not rely on the partner module to
get commissioned
For internal use
21
Nokia Siemens Networks

Network Engineering

RF sharing GSM LTE

O&M aspects
It is recommended to commission Master SM first
Slave will take shared object into use immediately when Slave is
commissioned

License Management
In LTE the SW monitoring concept is applied to derive the feature
usage from the configuration data
For GSM (slave mode) the GSM specific license is required

Performance management
Both system modules report their counters separately

HW Management
The standard Hardware Management (Inventory) is applied. Both

slave and master NE includes the hardware information of the shared

equipment

For internal use

22
Nokia Siemens Networks

Network Engineering

RF sharing GSM LTE

O&M aspects
Fault
management
The alarms are managed separately for LTE and GSM
Alarms of shared resources are doubled (master and slave alarm) and
send to respective technology specific object, e.g. GSM cell and LTE
cell, of each system module (LTE and GSM)
If the shared resource is faulty the alarm is raised in both technologies
and marked as shared. This emphasize that the correction should be
made via LTE side
