RESEARCH SUPPORTING PURPOSE OF THE GROUP:

Sharing in small groups helps to normalize what students
are currently experiencing.
Adolescents need support as they anticipate career decisions, transition issues,
social challenges, and academic hurdles. (Sink et al., 2012)
Erik Erikson, developmental theorist, defines this stage (aged 5-12) as Industry
vs. Inferiority (1968).

Peer groups are a major source of self-esteem.

Adolescents are looking to win approval by demonstrating specific
competencies that are valued by society.

Children should develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments.

Encouragement and success in this stage = Competence.

If initiative is not encouraged, child will doubt abilities and a sense of

inferiority will develop.

Young adolescents are therefore, ripe for small-group discussions and activities
related to, diversity, social justice, bullying, friendship, educational success, and
behavioral concerns.
(Akos et al., 2007)
