EXAMPLE OF
DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

My most comfortable place

The place that I feel most comfortable is my
hometown of Huntington Beach.
Huntington Beach is in California about forty
miles south of Los Angles. It is known as
the surfing capital of the world and the best
beach in Orange County.
I relax as I watch the surfers gently glide
over the tumbling ocean waves. Seeing
the tall palm trees sway in the wind is calming
to me as I watch the rolling sand dunes. The
pier, as red as a ruby, stands out to me among
the deep blue ocean. As I lay on the sand, I
see kites rise above the clouds and soar
gracefully in the wind. The fisherman cast their
line off the pier hoping to feel a tug and reel in
a big fish.

The night market

The night market begins when the
vendors arrive in the late afternoon.
More and more goods laden vans
arrive to begin a brisk day of
business. Most of the vendors busily
set out to set up their stalls
respectively in order to get ready for
a brisk day of business.

The Blond guitar

My most valuable possession is an old, slightly
warped blond guitar--the first instrument I taught
myself how to play. It's nothing fancy, just a
Madeira folk guitar, all scuffed and scratched and
finger-printed. At the top is a bramble of copperwound strings, each one hooked through the eye
of a silver tuning key. The strings are stretched
down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the
wood worn by years of fingers pressing chords and
picking notes. The body of the Madeira is shaped
like an enormous yellow pear, one that was
slightly damaged in shipping. The blond wood has
been chipped and gouged to gray, particularly
where the pick guard fell off years ago.

The Owl
A scream passing through an open window
at the edge of town rattles the settled
sounds of a night tucked in, the filtering
whispers of leaves outside in the breeze
interrupted, yielding to the call of a helpless
exater protected by sound walls; only the
nearby creek persists. Call of crickets resign
under full moon, and hill-riding wind halts
for a moment following the cry. Slowly, the
leaves begin to whisper again, though
slightly muffled, offset by the impression of
a scream when it was the last thing on the
nights mind.

A Friendly Clown
On one corner of my dresser sits a smiling toy clown
on a tiny unicycle--a gift I received last Christmas
from a close friend. The clown's short yellow hair,
made of yarn, covers its ears but is parted above the
eyes. The blue eyes are outlined in black with thin,
dark lashes flowing from the brows. It has cherry-red
cheeks, nose, and lips, and its broad grin disappears
into the wide, white ruffle around its neck. The clown
wears a fluffy, two-tone nylon costume. The left side
of the outfit is light blue, and the right side is red.
The two colors merge in a dark line that runs down
the center of the small outfit. Surrounding its ankles
and disguising its long black shoes are big pink bows.
The white spokes on the wheels of the unicycle
gather in the center and expand to the black tire so
that the wheel somewhat resembles the inner half of
a grapefruit
