HOLY EUCHARIST
Origin of the sacrament
The Eucharist find its origin in the Gospel
accounts of the Last Supper
Do this in memory of Me.
The new testament points to four
narratives of the Last Supper:
-Matthew 26:26-29
-Luke 22:14-20
-Mark 14:22-25
-1 Corinthians 11:23-26
John has underscored Jesus as the
Bread of Life

HOLY EUCHARIST
Origin of the sacrament
The Passover Meal when Yahweh passed over
the land of Egypt and slew every first-born male
child of the household
It signified their crossing over from slavery to
freedom (Exodus 12)

HOLY EUCHARIST
Origin of the sacrament
a prayer of praise and thanksgiving to God,
and a first course of bitter relishes that
symbolized the bitterness of the Hebrews
enslavement.
The meal of roasted lamb was eaten with
wine and unleavened bread, further prayers of
blessings were offered.
The meal ended with a psalm of praise and a
final thanksgiving prayer over the last cup of
wine.
At the end of Passover meal, the final cup of
wine recalls the Jewish hope in the future
coming of the Messiah

HOLY EUCHARIST
Origin of the sacrament
Eucharist comes from a Greek word that means
to give thanks
The Gospel accounts show that:
- Jesus took the bread and then the cup of wine,
He gave thanks to the Father, He broke the bread
and gave the bread and the cup to his disciples to
repeat the same actions and words that He spoke:
- Do this in memory of Me.
The Eucharist is the memorial of Jesus ministry,
passion, death and resurrection.
We experience in the here and now, the present
moment, the grace of God at work in our lives,
in Jesus Who gives Himself up for us.

HOLY EUCHARIST
The Eucharist is the family banquet of all
who constitute the Church. It is the meal
at which all are fed, at which no one is a
foreigner. Rich and poor, powerful and
powerless, old and young, landowners
and the homeless are all welcome at the
one table at which Christ once again
feeds his people. The intimate
interconnection between Church and
Eucharist is a dynamic, active
relationship.
(Smolarski, SJ, 1995)

HOLY EUCHARIST
Liturgy of the Word
Consists of reading taken from the Old testament,
responsarial psalm.
Another reading from the New Testament, the Alleluia, the
Gospel, homily by the presider, profession of faith and
genral intercessory prayers.
We are reminded that the Word of God is supposed to be
the center of Christian community,s life.
According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal
(GIRM): When the sacred scriptures are read in church,
God Himself is speaking to His people and Christ, present
in His word, is proclaimed in His Gospel.
Profession of faith- an opportunity given to the faithful to
renew their baptismal promises.
Intercessory prayers- allows the assembly of the faithful to
pray for one another .

HOLY EUCHARIST
Preparation of the gifts
a kind of transitional rite from the liturgy of the
Word to the liturgy of the Eucharist. (Klein and
Wolfe)
Its purpose is to prepare the altar for the liturgy of
the Eucharist.
Part of the Mass that consists the offeratory where
bread and wine and at times, other gifts like
flowers, candles and the like are brought to the
altar.

HOLY EUCHARIST
Liturgy of the Eucharist
Introductory exchange between the presider
and the assembly, followed by the Preface,
the Eucharistic prayer, the Lords prayer,
signs of peace, breaking of bread, pouring of
wine and communion.
The core of the liturgy of the Eucharist, is the
Eucharistic prayer or the great prayer and
thanksgiving.
It is concluded by holy communion, a most
important moment in the celebration, when
everyone, who receives Christ under the
species of bread and wine, become united
with Jesus and with one another.

HOLY EUCHARIST
Liturgy of the Eucharist
The Cathechism of the Catholic church(CCC) names
five
characteristics of a Eucharist prayer:
1. Preface: we give thanks to God
2. Epiclesis: the presider invokes God to send the
Holy Spirit upon the gifts of bread and wine so that
these may become the Body and Blood of Christ.
3. Institution narrative: helps the faithful remember
the through the words and actions of Jesus and the
power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus becomes present in
the bread and wine.
4. Anamnesis: we commemorate the passion,
resurrection and the glorious return of Christ
5. Intercessions: the congregation prays for the
Church, the Pope, the bishops and the clergy, the
living and the dead.

HOLY EUCHARIST
The Concluding Rites
last part of the Eucharistic celebration
marks the commissioning of the faithful to do
his/her role in the world
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord
for it is the liturgy through which, especially in
the divine sacrifice of the Eucharist, the work of
our redemption is accomplished and it is through
the liturgy, especially, that the faithful are
enabled to express in their lives and manifest to
others the mystery of Christ and the real nature of
the true Church At the same it marvellously
increases their power to preach Christ and thus
show forth the Church, a sign of lifted up among
nations (Constitution on Sacred Liturgy)

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on
the Sacrament
New Testament focuses on the:
Real presence of the Risen Lord
The central emphasis of the Eucharistic
doctrine

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on the
Sacrament
The early Christians met regularly as a
community.
They shared a common belief in Christ as
someone truly involved in their lives
they meet every week:
To recall the teachings of the Lord, and
To renew their awareness of his presence
among them in the breaking of the
bread (Acts 2:42)

HOLY EUCHARIST
And because of this renewed
awareness of Jesus presence in the
eucharist:
Christians became more conscious
that:
Jesus is not only present in their
celebration of the Eucharist, but He
is truly present throughout their
daily lives as well.

Thanksgiving
Thankfully and joyfully, we Christians
celebrate the fact that:
Christ is with us everywhere and all the
time.
Thus, our greeting, The Lord be with you!

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on the
Sacrament
The Holy Eucharist is likewise a
sacrament of Christian community.
Brotherhood
Early Christians shared not only their time for
worship, but they likewise shared material goods,
especially to those who had none.
The presence of Christ under the appearances of
bread and wine both symbolizes and creates this
Christian charity.

Communion and community
therefore means and demands
sharing and cooperation
-not just in our worship life, but in
our daily living too.

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on the
Sacrament
The mass as a sacrament of sacrifice
The words and actions of the priest and the
congregation show that:
It is a sacrificial meal commemorating and
celebrating Jesus total self-giving on the
cross
His sacrifice on the cross was the ultimate
expression of His love for us.

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on the
Sacrament
The Eucharist as a sacrificed meal
Celebrates the victory of life-giving love
over the power of selfishness or sin
Unless the grain of what falls to the earth
and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat.
But if it dies, it produces much fruit. (John
12:24)

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on the
Sacrament
The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament of
Christian service
Chistians cannot yearn for anything more
ardently than to serve the men of the
modern world ever more generously and
effectively (Gaudium et Spes, 93)
The Christian community therefore is the
servant of everyone in need.

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on
the Sacrament
The Holy Eucharist is a sacrament
of Christian service
the members that make up the Body
of Christ, united in the Eucharist
should follow in the footsteps of
Jesus Christ.

HOLY EUCHARIST
The teachings of the Church on the
Sacrament
Jesus therefore is teaching the Church, to be
attentive to the needs of one another especially
of those who are marginalized by the society.
Jesus, Who is present in the Eucharist, is the
same Jesus Who lives in hearts of men.
Those therefore who share Christs Body in the
Eucharist must also imitate Jesus life of service
and love.
