HUMAN PERSON

LIFE OF MAN - TO KNOW AND LOVE G

God, infinitely perfect and blessed in

Himself, in a plan of sheer goodness
freely created Man to make him share
in His own blessed life.

HUMAN PERSON
"God created man in
his own image, in the
image of God he
created him, male and
female he created
them.
Man occupies a unique place in creation:
he is "in the image of God";
in his own nature he unites the spiritual
and material worlds;
he is created "male and female";
God established him in His friendship.

HUMAN PERSON:
IN THE IMAGE OF GOD
Of all visible creatures only Man is
"able to know and love his creator.
He is "the only creature on earth
that God has willed for its own
sake, and he alone is called to
share, by knowledge and love, in
God's own life.
It was for this end that he was
created, and this is the fundamental
reason for his dignity.

HUMAN PERSON:
IN THE IMAGE OF GOD

Being in the image of God

the human individual
possesses the dignity
of a person,
who is not just
something, but someone.

HUMAN PERSON:
IN THE IMAGE OF GOD

God created everything for

man, but Man in turn was
created to serve and love God
(mans response of faith) and to
offer all creation back to him.

HUMAN PERSON:
IN THE IMAGE OF GOD

Hence the Bible

says that whoever
violates a human
being violates Gods
property
(cf. Genesis 6:5).

HUMAN PERSON:
IN THE IMAGE OF GOD
Because of its common origin
the human race forms a unity,
for "from one ancestor [God]
made all nations to inhabit the
whole earth.
"This law of human solidarity
and charity, without excluding
the rich variety of persons,
cultures and peoples, assures
us that all men are truly
brethren.

HUMAN PERSON:
IN THE IMAGE OF GOD

Throughout all the highs and

lows of history the human
being stays the same
earth, formed from earth,
and destined to return to it.
Humanity is declared to be
one creation of God from
His one earth.

HUMAN PERSON:
"BODY AND SOUL BUT TRULY
The
human person,
ONE"

created in the image of

God, is a being at once
corporeal and spiritual.
The biblical account
expresses this reality in
symbolic language when it
affirms that "then the LORD
God formed man of dust
from the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life; and man

HUMAN PERSON:
"BODY AND SOUL BUT TRULY
ONE"
In Sacred Scripture, the
term "soul" often refers
to human life or the
entire human person.
But "soul" also refers to the
innermost aspect of man,
that which is of greatest
value in him, that by which
he is most especially in
God's image.

HUMAN PERSON:
"BODY AND SOUL BUT TRULY
ONE"

The unity of soul and body is so

profound that one has to
consider the soul to be the
"form" of the body: i.e., it is
because of its spiritual soul that
the body made of matter
becomes a living, human body;
spirit and matter, in man, are
not two natures united, but
rather their union forms a
single nature.

HUMAN PERSON:
"BODY AND SOUL BUT TRULY
The
Church teaches that
ONE"

every spiritual soul is

created immediately by God
- it is not "produced" by the
parents - and also that it is
immortal:
it does not perish when it
separates from the body at
death, and it will be
reunited with the body at
the final Resurrection.

HUMAN PERSON:
"BODY ANDSometimes
SOUL BUT
the soulTRULY
is
distinguished
from the spirit: St.
ONE"

Paul for instance prays that God

may sanctify his people
"wholly", with "spirit and soul
and body" kept sound and
blameless at the Lord's coming.
The Church teaches that this
distinction does not introduce a
duality into the soul. "Spirit"
signifies that from creation man
is ordered to a supernatural end
and that his soul can
gratuitously be raised beyond all
it deserves to communion with

HUMAN PERSON:
"BODY AND SOUL BUT TRULY
ONE"
If the soul, created in
God's image, forms
matter to constitute the
human body,
then the human person
as a whole is the bearer
of the divine image in a
spiritual as well as a
bodily dimension.

Man and woman are both

"It is not good that the man should be alone. I will
make him a helper fit for him.None of the animals
can be man's partner. The woman God "fashions"
from the man's rib and brings to him elicits on the
man's part a cry of wonder, an exclamation of love
and communion: "This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh. Man discovers woman as
another "I", sharing the same humanity.

they are equal as persons

and complementary as

Created in the image of

God, human beings are
called to love and
communion.

Because this vocation is

realized in in the

husband and wife, the
difference between man

element in the constitution

It is of the essence of

that these personal

embraced in a human

at once realized and
prefigured in the
Church.

Call to Family, Community

and the Common Good

No community is
more central than the
family- the basic cell
of society

By common good is to be understood "the sum total

of social conditions which allow people, either as
groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfillment
more fully and more easily." The common good
concerns the life of all. It calls for prudence from
each, and even more from those who exercise the
office of authority. It consists of three essential
elements:
First, the common good presupposes respect for the
person as such.
Second, the common good requires the social wellbeing and development of the group itself.
Finally, the common good requires peace, that is, the
stability and security of a just order.

By virtue of his soul and his spiritual powers of

intellect and will, man is endowed with freedom,
an outstanding manifestation of the divine
image.
Man, entice by the Evil One, abused his
freedom at the very beginning of history. He
succumbed to temptation and did what was
evil.
He desired the good, but his nature bears
the wound of original sin. He is now inclined
to evil and subject to error.
