Analysis of Turbiscan file

Step 1 Check the quality of the meniscus
Transmission graph no reference

Good meniscus
Bad meniscus

Very important not to misinterpret variations at the top!

Analysis of Turbiscan file

Step 1 Check the quality of the meniscus
Avoid bad meniscus:
Avoid air bubbles formation during sampling
by pipetting from bottom to top
Flatten the meniscus as much as possible
after sampling
By hitting the cell gently
By leaving the sample in the oven when
working at high temperature

Leave the sample to equilibrate when working

at high temperature (dilation, capillary)

Step 2 Transmission or Backscattering ?

Reflexions on
glass cell

When T>0.2%, only work on

Transmission

Step 3 Zoom on the right area

Focus on the important area where the product

is!

Step 4 Put the graph in reference mode
DELTA BACKSCATTERING

Visualise the variations more

easily

Step 4 Put the graph in reference mode
Choose the reference profile
Reference at the 3rd scan

Migration phenomena
What can you compute?
Mean value at the bottom and top :
To measures the intensity of the variation

Zone set up

Mean value kinetics

For a quick and easy comparison between samples

Migration phenomena
What can you compute?
Peak thickness :
To measures the thickness of the phase formed

Zone set up

Thickness kinetics (in

mm)

For a second level calculation, closer to what you are

used to

Migration phenomena
What can you compute?
Migration velocity=slope of clarified layer kinetics

Slope = migration
velocity

For a number to compare your

samples

Migration phenomena
What can you compute?
Hydrodynamic diameter : Stokes Law for sedimentation
V = velocity of migration of the dispersed
phase
4,6
= density difference between the

dispersed and the continuous phases

18 V (1 )3
= density of the continuous phase
d
g = gravity acceleration (= 9.81m.s-),
g 1
d = hydrodynamic diameter of dispersed
particles
= volume fraction
= cinematic viscosity of the continuous
