What Really Stood Out Counseling in the College Setting


Stress
Additional stress in college is elicited by such factors as academics, social
relationships, finances, daily living, cognitive deficits, illness, depression and
anxiety, poor nutrition, decreased life satisfaction, and decreased amount of
sleep (Brougham, Zail, Mendoza, & Miller, 2009)
Homesickness and Adjustment
Complex Trauma and Dating Violence
Symptoms include emotional liability, dissociation, feelings of guilt and shame, lack
of trust in others, medical issues, and hopelessness about being understood
(Courtois, 2008).
Relationship Violence
90% of college relationships involve some form of emotional or psychological
abuse, and about 20% of relationships include sexual violence (Amar & Gennaro,
2005)
Substance Use
- Substance use is a prevalent occurrence on college campuses and has been
linked with risky behaviors and various health problems (Gladding & Newsome,
2015)
Suicide
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death for traditionally aged college students
(Suicide.org, 2012)
