Significance/ Impact/ Consequence
Events that affect many people the more it affects,
the better the story.
Examples:
Hunger affects 3.1 million families in PH: survey
A proposed tax increase, tuition hike or rise in oil

prices

NEWS VALUES
Proximity or closeness to home
Stories about events and situations in one's home
community are more newsworthy than events that
take place far away
Examples:
7 dead in Magalang, Angeles City shootouts
Pamintuan promises a drug-free Angeles City

NEWS VALUES
Prominence
Stories involving well-known places, companies,
groups or people, especially celebrities.
Examples:
Mayor-turned-President Duterte
Manny Pacquaio

NEWS VALUES
Human interest
People are interested in people.
Example:
Lolo Lito, the Candyman

CRITERIA
Is it new?
If its not new, then its not news
Is it unusual?
Things are happening all the time, but not all of them
are news, even when they are new.

CRITERIA
Is it interesting or significant?
Events which are new and unusual may still not be of
general interest, unless it affects them.
Is it about people?
Most news is automatically about people, because it is
the things people do to change the world which makes
news.

NEWS VALUES
Progress
Improvements/ developmentsinanyfield medicine,
science, education, etc.
The report should be always of how the changes affect
people's lives, for better or for worse.
Example:
DoH launches first-ever vaccine against dengue

Novelty/ Oddity/ Bizarre
If an event is out of the ordinary, it will have a greater
effect than something that is an everyday occurrence
Example:
Dog bites man
vs.
Man bites dog

NEWS VALUES
Continuity
A story which is already in the news gathers a kind of
momentum the running story.
Examples:
President Dutertes proclamation
Campaign vs drugs

Consonance
Refers to the media's readiness to report an item,

which they are more likely to do if they are prepared


for it.
Journalists pre-conceived idea of an angle even

before they get to a coverage

NEWS VALUES
Conflict
Opposition of people, forces or organizations resulting in
a dramatic effect. Stories with conflict or disagreement
between two or more people are often quite newsworthy.
Example:
Trillanes vs Duterte during the campaign

Timeliness
It's timely if it happened recently.
Examples:
PBA player Bulawan dies after collapsing during

practice
Hundreds of drug pushers, users surrender

Currency or flavor of the month
Events and situations that are currently in the news
and being talked about.
Example:
New PNP director cracks the whip on cops

Disaster and tragedy
Air crashes, train crashes, ships sinking, volcanic
eruptions, earthquakes, typhoons or human tragedies
like children falling down deep wells from which they
cannot be rescued.

Crime
Any crime can be news, but more serious crimes or
unusual crimes generally make bigger news stories.
Examples:
Akyat Bahay, Budol-Budol, riding-in-tandem, road
traffic offense, breaking and entering, corruption,
forgery, rape or murder

Money
Fortunes made and lost, school fees, taxes, the countrys
budget, food prices, wage rises, economic crises and
compensation claims.
Example:
A little girl who donates her savings to a huge fund-raising
event

The underdog
One of the roles of a journalist is to defend the rights
of the little person - the soldier against the unjust
officer, the innocent man against false charges, the
poor against exploitation.
Example:

Religion
Two types of religious news story:
1. Events involving people's religious lives
Example: building of a new church or a pilgrimage.
2. Statements by religious leaders on moral and
spiritual affairs

Health
Many people are concerned with their health, so they are interested in
stories about traditional remedies, medical research, diseases, hospitals and
clinics, drugs, diet and exercise.

Sex
All societies are interested in sex, even if they do not talk about it openly.
Many news stories about sex involve behaviour which goes outside society's
generally accepted standards.

Weather
The weather may affect the daily routine of people and is of interest when it
behaves unusually, with exceptionally high or low temperatures, or
exceptionally high or low rainfall.

Food and drink


The rich person plans feasts, the poor person wants enough to eat and drink.
Shortages and gluts, crop diseases and harvest sizes, prices of food in the
market or the launch of a new brand of beer - these all make news.

Entertainment
Stories about music, dance, theatre, cinema and carving keep us informed of
developments in the arts, who is doing what, who is performing where, and
what it is worth going to see or hear.

Sports
Many people participate in sports and many others are spectators. They all
want to know sports results, news of sportsmen and sportswomen and their
achievements.
