COULOMBS LAW
Col. Charles Coulomb - stated that the force between two very small objects
separated in a vacuum or free space by a distance which is large compared to their
size is proportional to the charge on each an inversely proportional to the square of
the distance between them.
In mathematical notation:
Where:
Q1and Q2 positive and negative quantities of charge. Unit: coulomb
R distance of separation. Unit: meters
F force acted upon. Unit: coulomb/meters or Newton

Sample problem:
A charge of 3 x 10 -4 C at P(1,2,3) and a charge of
-10-4 C at Q(2,0,5). Calculate the vector force
acted upon two charges and the magnitude of
force on charge P.
Solution:
Given:
Q1 = 3 x 10-4
Q2 = -10-4
F2 = 30 Newton
Exercises:
1.A 2-mc positive charge is located in vacuum at
P1( 3, -2, -4) and 5 C negative charge is at P2(1,4,2). Find the vector force on the negative
charge. What is the magnitude of the force on
the charge at P1.
