Health and

Teens
Chapter 1.1
Pgs. 6-10

Objective

Compare the major causes of

death in the past with the major
causes of death today.
Distinguish between controllable
risk factors and uncontrollable risk
factors.
Compare the major causes of
death for teens with those of other
age groups in the United States.

Objective

List the six health risk behaviors

that lead to health problems in
teens.
Name three behaviors you can
adopt now to improve your
health.

Key Terms

Lifestyle Disease a disease caused

partly by unhealthy behaviors and
partly by other factors
Risk Factor anything that increases
the likelihood of injury, disease, or
other health problems
Sedentary not taking part in physical
activity on a regular basis

Health Today

When you hear the word healthy

what do you think ?
Examples:
Eating right
Being fit
Not sick or having diseases

Health Today: Infectious

Diseases
In the 1800s and early 1900s there
were infectious diseases caused by
pathogens, such as bacteria.
An infectious disease is passed from
one person to another.
Includes:
Polio
Tuberculosis (TB)
Pneumonia
Influenza ( the flu)

Lifestyle Diseases

Disease caused by unhealthy

behaviors and partly by other factors
Over the years, medical advances, better
living conditions, and a focus on
preventative medicine have helped bring
infectious diseases of the past under
control.
Most of the diseases that were common
50 to 100 years ago can now be
prevented or cured.

What are some

examples of lifestyle
diseases?
AIDS

Diabetes
Cancer
Heart Disease

Controllable Risk Factors

for Heart Disease

Health Risk Factors

A Risk Factor is anything that

increases the likelihood of injury,
disease, or other health problems.

Eating a high-fat diet

Overweight
Smoking
Lack of exercise

Controllable Risk
Factors

Controllable risk factors are

risk factors that you can do
something about.
They can be controlled by your
behavior.
smoking
Exercise
Drinking
Diet (eating right)

Controllable Risk Factors

For example, what can you do

to decrease your risk of
developing heart disease?

exercise regularly
avoid smoking
manage a healthy weight
eat healthful, nutritious meals

Uncontrollable Risk
Factors

Unfortunately, not all health risk

factors are controllable; The ones that
cant be changed are called
uncontrollable risk factors.
Examples of uncontrollable risk
factors for heart diseases are
Age
Race
Gender
Heredity

Six Health Risk Behaviors

1. Sedentary lifestyle-not taking part in
physical activity on a regular basis is
referred to as being sedentary.
2. Alcohol and other drug use-alcohol
abuse can cause liver disease, certain
types of cancer, heart disease, and
brain damage. Alcohol and drug use
are major factors in car accidents,
physical fights, depression, suicide,
and mental disorders.

Six Health Risk Behaviors

3. Sexual activity-sexual activity
outside of a committed relationship,
such as marriage, puts people at
risk for health problems.
4. Behaviors that cause injuries-as
mentioned, the four major causes of
death for teenagers are motor
vehicle accidents, other accidents,
homicide, and suicide.

Six Health Risk Behaviors

5. Tobacco use-smoking is the single
leading preventable cause of death in
the United States. Smoking is a
controllable risk factor for heart disease,
cancer, and respiratory disease.
6. Poor eating habits- your eating habits
can either increase or lower your
chances of developing many diseases.
Eating at least five servings of fruits and
vegetables will help prevent disease
