How to

Create a CV
that wins
you the
Interview
Step by step guide on how to
write a CV designed by a
recruitment consultant with
more than 10 years experience

As technology changes so does the way we apply for new job

opportunities. The days are long gone when you would buy the local
newspaper on jobs night and turn the pages reading through all of the
ads with a pen in hand to circle the ones of interest.
Now we go on to job boards on the internet and scroll through pages
and pages of available opportunities, clicking on links and uploading
our CV. We no longer pick up the phone and speak to a human being,
an employer/hiring manager to introduce ourselves and ask for more
details. We no longer spruce ourselves up armed with copies of our CV
and go door to door canvasing to showcase our talent in person.
So when we click the submit button on our online application what
actually happens to our application?

Introduction Job Hunting Evolved

Did you know? 2.5 Million people applied for a job at Google in 2013
Source (KissMetrics):Inside Google's Culture of Success and Employee Happiness

Through combined media outlets one average job opportunity can attract
anything from 50 to 250 applications. To manage this many companies now use
software, based on keyword matching. So, they will upload the job description to
their software and applications will be scored based on how many of the
keywords in their application match those that appear in the job description.
In reality this means that if your application does not include those all important
keywords, your application may never see the light of day!
Today, I am going to show you how to create a CV that will bring you to the top of
the search criteria of the recruitment software, that not only satisfies the
software but also engages the reader when your application gets in front of
human eyes.

Introduction What happens when you press

submit

Did you know? Personality

and Team Fit (known as
Soft Skills) is now equally
as important as
possessing the experience
and hard skills.
Unless you are applying
for a Graduate position or
a role that requires a visa,
education is no longer a
top priority for many
Topcompanies.

Your Name
I

recommend that you simply place your name. If you have letters after your name do not include them in this section as it
confuses the software.

Examples: Sharon Hibble

Your Address
The

software will use your address to match you to all current and future vacancies within your area

Examples: 15 Steep Hill, London, NW4 ZPX

or

Long Road 345, Bayside, CA4567

Your contact Number

If

you are applying for vacancies outside of your country please include the Country dialling code

Examples: +44 (UK) +1 (USA)

Also

double check the number is correct!

Email address
Ensure

that it is spelt correctly and if you press enter afterwards it will hyperlink

Skype ID, LinkedIn and website/portfolio links

This

is where you add all of this information, again ensure they are spelt correctly and all links work.

bizarre need to know where things come from

communication and education. I support the Ian
Somerhalder Foundation and believe that change
is possible. I am very challenge oriented in both
my professional and personal life. I enjoy
listening to a varied range of music and I am
socially adept. I also enjoy writing and have
produced & published several articles to help
individuals produce winning resumes, cover
letters and gain new career opportunities. I live
life to full, grateful for every day and grab every
opportunity that comes along.

Creating your CV The final Steps

It is a myth that your resume should only be one page or no more than two pages.
I am 42 and have 26 years of work history. I couldn't possibly sell myself, my skills and wealth of
experience in one page.
As the decades have rolled by the meanings of resume and CV have changed considerably. In The
States a Resume was originally a short competency one page document and a CV was the full history.
Nowadays both phrases are banded about with little understanding of their actual meaning.
If you are serious about finding a new opportunity then no way should you be sending out a one page
resume. Acceptable length for a resume is between two and four pages depending on your work
history. My CV is 3 pages long.
Glamour Resume:
With software being what it is, it is so easy now to jazz up your resume with fancy fonts, colours and
columns. Please don't!! This is a professional document that is more than likely going to be read by
a Human Resources person first. As long as you have spellchecked your document and the layout is
simple and easy to read, all they care about is the content - Can you do the job you are applying for!
