Virtual Reality Technology

What is real? How do you define real? If you're talking about

what you can hear, what you can smell, taste and feel, then
real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.

Virtual reality
Virtual reality is an artificial
environment that is created with
software and presented to the user in
such a way that the user suspends
belief and accepts it as a real
environment. On a computer, virtual
reality is primarily experienced
through two of the five senses: sight
and sound.

Origin/Timeline
Cinematographer Morton Heilig in the 1950s conceptualized an all
sensory theater experience.
First Head Mounted Display (HMD) developed in 1961.
Ivan Sutherlands Ultimate Display concept guided almost all the
developments within the field of virtual reality. In 1966, he built an HMD
that was tethered to a computer system.
In
1984,
Michael
McGreevy
computer interface (HCI) designs.

Putting it another way, virtual reality is essentially:

Believable
Interactive
Computer-generated
Explorable
Immersive

Fully immersive
First, a plausible, and richly detailed virtual world to
explore; a computer model or simulation, in other words.
Second, a powerful computer that can detect what we're
going and adjust our experience accordingly, in real time
(so what we see or hear changes as fast as we movejust
like in real reality). Third, hardware linked to the
computer that fully immerses us in the virtual world as
we roam around.

Collaborative

Collaboration and sharing are likely to

become increasingly important features of VR
in future.

Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML

The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is a file
format for describing three-dimensional interactive worlds and
objects. It can be used in conjunction with the World Wide Web.
It is used to create three-dimensional representations of
complex scenes such as illustrations, product definitions, and
virtual reality presentations.
VRML is capable of representing static and animated objects
and it can have hyperlinks to other media such as sound, video,
and image. Interpreters (browsers) for VRML are widely
available for many different platforms as well as authoring tools
for creating VRML files. VRML supports an extensibility model
that allows new objects to be defined and a registration process
to allow application communities to develop interoperable
extensions to the base standard.

What equipment do we need for Virtual Reality?

Applications of virtual reality

Medicine

Games and entertainment

Some techie info:

Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML)- the earliest 3D modeling
language for the Web.
3DML - a 3D modeling language where a user can visit a spot (i.e., a Web
site) through most Internet browsers after installing a plug-in.
X3D - the language that replaced VRML as the standard for creating
virtual environments in the Internet.
Collaborative Design Activity (COLLADA) - a format used to allow file
interchanges within 3D programs.

The recommended hardware specifications for the full Oculus Rift

experience:

running current generation 3D games at 1080p resolution at 75fps or
higher.
Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
8GB+ RAM
Windows 7 SP1 or newer
2x USB 3.0 ports
HDMI 1.3 video output supporting a 297MHz clock via a direct output
architecture

Though the disadvantages of Virtual reality can disturb the humans

perception ability, its advantages in different fields makes it user
friendly.
The sole objective of virtual reality is to give the user an environment as
realistic as possible and a thrilling sensory experience.
The technology of virtual reality is advancing rapidly and it won't be
long before it becomes a most exciting source of entertainment in our
homes.
