Basic Paging Principle

Paging Sinalling Ladder

The 51-Frame Control Channel

MultiFrame

The 51-Frame works on

both uplink and downlink
UL slots are assigned to
RACH
DL slots assignment for
PCH/AGCH depend on:
CCCH_CONF, BS_PA_MFRMS
and BS_AG_BLKS_RES.

BSS Paging Parameters

CCCH_CONF indicates the organization of the common control channels, normally

000 or 001.
CCCH_CONF

BS_CC_CHANS

BS_CCCH_SDCCH_COMB

001

010

BS_PA_MFRM

indicates the number of 51-multiframes between transmission of paging

messages to mobiles of the same paging group. 3 bits (before channel coding) range 2 to 9.

BS_AG_BLKS_RES

indicates the number of blocks on each common control channel reserved

for access grant messages. 3 bits (before channel coding) range 0 to 7.

51-Frame Control Channel MultiFrame Structure

With CCCH Combined and Non-Combined
CCCH_CONF=000

CCCH_CONF=001

PCH Group/Specific Frame

Number/Paging Block Index
PAGING_GROUP (0 .. N1) = ((IMSI mod 1000) mod (BS_CC_CHANS x N)) mod N
Specific Frame Number: PAGING_GROUP div (N div BS_PA_MFRMS) = (FN div 51) mod

(BS_PA_MFRMS)
Paging block index = PAGING_GROUP mod (N div BS_PA_MFRMS) (0-7)

where
N = number of paging blocks "available" on one CCCH = (number of paging blocks

"available" in a 51-multiframe on one CCCH) x BS_PA_MFRMS.

IMSI = International Mobile Subscriber Identity, as defined in 3GPP TS 03.03.
mod = Modulo.
div = Integer division.

Motorola: CCCH_CONF=000, BS_CC_CHANS=1, PS_PA_MFRMS=6, BS_AG_BLKS_RES=1

N=(9-1)*6=48
PAGING_GROUP: 0-47
FN for PAGING_GROUP 0: FN div 51=0,6,12,18,
Paging Block Index=0
FN for PAGING_GROUP 3: FN div 51=3,9,15,
Paging Block Index=3

A Paging Message
MSC must provide BSS

with IMSI for the BSS to

decide Paging Group, FN
and Block Index.
TMSI is Optional.
BSS decide which to use:

IMSI or TMSI??

Air Paging Message Types

Type 1: This message is sent on the CCCH by the network to up to two

mobile stations. The mobile stations are identified by their TMSI/P-TMSI

or IMSI
Type 2: This message is sent on the CCCH by the network to two or three
mobile stations. Two of the mobile stations are identified by their TMSI/PTMSI while the third is identified by its TMSI/P-TMSI or IMSI.
Type 3: This message is sent on the CCCH by the network to four mobile
stations. The mobile stations are identified by their TMSIs/P-TMSIs

Network Related Timers (E & M)

PAGTIMEFRST1LA: defines the time supervision for page

response of the first paging attempt in one location area.

After expiration of this timer the paging is repeated according
to parameter PAGREP1LA or PAGREPCT1LA.
PAGTIMEFRSTGLOB: This parameter defines the time
supervision for page response of the first global paging
attempt. After expiration of this timer the paging is repeated
according to AXE parameter PAGREPGLOB.
PAGTIMEREP1LA: This parameter defines the time supervision
for page response of repeated paging in one location area.
After expiration of this timer no new paging repetition for this
call is done
PAGTIMEREPGLOB: This parameter defines the time
supervision for page response of the repeated global paging.
After expiration of this timer no new paging repetition for this
call is done
RR_T3101: Guard time for Immediate Assign. Started as
'IMM_ASS_CMD' is sent to BTS and stopped by reception of
'EST_IND' from BTS.The allocated channel will be released at
timer expiry.

Paging Capacity
No of Page/1s=No of available PCH in 51-

Frame/0.235
->Motorola: No of Page/1s=(9-1)/0.235=34
block/s=122400block/h~367200MS/h~22000
0MS/h (40% reserved)
->Huawei: No of Page/1s=(9-2)/0.235=29
block/s=104400block/h~313200MS/h~18792
00MS/h (40% reserved)
=>Paging Times/h should not be greater than
200000 times

Reasons for Low PSR

Wrong Configuration
Bad Coverage
Global Paging (LAC 0)
Many Paging Retry at MSC
UL Interference
Path Balance
Transmission
Hardware Fault
