Introduction

In this project, well take a very simple idea

-- the length of time it takes a capacitor to
charge -- and make something rather
amazing with it: a 3D touchless interface
that can track the position of your hand.

Requirements
Hardware and Software:
Tools

Soldering iron

Spray mount or a glue stick

Wire cutter/stripper
Relevant parts
Pieces of cardboard (3)
10KO resistors (3)
220KO resistors (3)
Alligator clips (3)
Arduino Uno Board
Shielded cable, cut off the ends, cut into (3) 2 lengths
Aluminium foil
Masking tape
Computer with Processing and Arduino software installed.

Procedure
Step 1: Setting up the Computer System
A computer installed with Arduino IDE and Processing Software.

Step 2: Setting up the Sensor Cube

Using the glue-stick and tape we will attach the cardboards and assemble
the plates to form one half of a cube.

Step 3: Setting up the Arduino Board

Now we prepare the wires with the alligator clips to connect the plates with
the Arduino Board and check the connection with a multimeter to make
sure a good electrical contact is made.

Step 4: Using the installed Software

From the Arduino IDE, upload the sketch to the Arduino. Keep the USB cable
connected to the Arduino, then install and load the Processing sketch. The
final step is to calibrate the software.

Output

Following the given steps in detail provide us with a rather

magical output where once you move your fist in the SensCube it
directly shows on the computer screen in a virtual 3D space.

This hand movement is tracked by the SensCube which will be

developed into a virtual 3D Tic tac toe game where the
dimensions will be already defined in the sketch and hence
wherever you would want to place your hand for your turn in the
game will be tracked, placed, recorded and shown on the screen.

Project Idea

To create a touch less interface using Arduino

UNO.
Commanding the computer via motion and
gestures without physically touching keyboard,
mouse or screen for gaming applications.
Control the hand movements using Capacitive
Sensing.
Instead of pressing switches and buttons, the
user only has to move his hand in the desired
direction.

Picture is the three capacitive plates representing the xy, xz,

and yz planes used to reference hand position.

Traditional Methods
While camera based gesture recognition
methods are most commonly used and they
often suffer from occlusion and lighting
condition problems.
To correctly capture hand-images on a
surface, a camera must be mounted above
the table or in front of the wall.
As a result the system configuration
becomes complex making it difficult to
implement the system as a portable
( integrated ) unit.

Advantages of Hand Gestures

Utilizing touchless input sensors makes
work with a software product user friendly.
Human efforts reduced
Portable
Cost-effective
The set-up is easy

Complexity Analysis
Converting the Capacitance Sensing as the
input for application.
Capturing the hand movements within the
capacitance field.
Tracking the speed of the hand movements.
Creating the proper capacitance field.

Applications
Can be used to play games without using
the keyboard, mouse or joystick.
Can be used by blind people to manage
applications that will be supported by
Arduino.
Tic tac toe and Racing games can be
developed.
