What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and
takes up space.
ALL solids, liquids, & gases

All matter is made of atoms

ATOM
The smallest particle that has the
characteristics of that element

Atoms
are so
small.

Atoms are made of

subatomic particles
(under/below)

Protons
Charge = positive
Location = nucleus
Mass = 1 AMU

Neutrons
Charge = Neutral
(not + or - )
Location = Nucleus
Mass = 1 AMU

Electrons
Charge = Negative
Location = Electron cloud
Mass = 0.0005 AMU
Electron Cloud

Element
A substance that cannot be broken down
into any other substance by physical or
chemical means.
An element is made of one type of atom.

All of the different elements are listed on

the periodic table
Examples: hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen

Atoms of the
same type

Element

Only oxygen atoms = Oxygen the element

Your Elements

Molecule
A group of 2 or more atoms held
together by chemical bonds.

More than one

atom joined
together

Molecule

2 Oxygen Atoms Joined together = Oxygen Molecule

Compound
A substance made
of two or more
elements that are
chemically
combined in a set
ratio.
Compounds are
represented by
chemical formulas

Sugar = C6H12O6

Carbon Dioxide= CO2

One atom can make a BIG

difference!!!

More than one

TYPE of atom
joined together

Compound

Oxygen Atoms + Hydrogen Atoms = Compound

3 States of Matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas

Solid
Volume & shape stay the same
Atoms in solids are tightly packed &
vibrate in place

There are 2 types of solids

Crystalline atoms are arranged in a
regular pattern to make crystals.
Ex: Sugar, Salt, Snow

Amorphous atoms are not arranged in a

pattern.

Liquid
Volume stays the same
Shape changes to fit its
container
Atoms in liquids are more
loosely packed & move
around each other

Liquids are described

by viscosity
High viscosity
Flows slowly, Ex: Honey

Low viscosity
Flows quickly, Ex: Water

Gas
Can change shape & volume
Atoms in gases are very far apart and
move around very quickly

Adding energy (such as heat)

causes a change in state.
This is a PHYSICAL change.

There are 2 types of

vaporization
Evaporation & Boiling

Molecules on the
surface of a liquid
turn to gas.
