THE CIRCULATORY

SYSTEM
2 DIVISIONS:
1. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
2. LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

1. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM- Transports blood

2. LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
-Transports the fluid called lymph

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
Transports:
Nutrients ( digestive products)
Gases
Hormones
Other materials to and from the cells of the
body.

PARTS:
1. HEART
2. BLOOD VESSELS
3. BLOOD

1. HEARTMuscular
Organ that
Pumps blood
To the diff.
Parts of the
Body.

PARTS:

Pericardium- encloses the heart.

-Protected from external injury by a rib cage
2. LAYERS: Epicardium, myocardium, endocardium
3. CHAMBERS
a. two atriareceiving chambers
thin-walled
b. two ventricles- pumping chambers forcing
blood out of the heart
thick-walled
4. VALVES- are flaps of muscles that prevent blood
from flowing.
1.

Quick Thinking:
How is the difference in the
thickness between the walls of
the atria and the ventricles and
between the two ventricles
related to the functions they
perform?
.

TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

VASCULAR SYSTEM System of tubes

Types of Transport system:
1. Closed Transport SystemSubstances dissolved in blood simply
diffuse from thin-walled capillary walls to
the nearby cells. Similarly, waste materials
from cells diffuse through the capillary
walls & into the blood stream.

VASCULAR SYSTEM System of tubes

1. Closed Transport System-

VASCULAR SYSTEM System of tubes

Types of Transport system:
2. Open SystemBlood is pumped by a tubular
heart through a blood vessel and
then out into the body cavity.

OPEN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Three types: arteries, veins, capillaries

VASCULAR SYSTEM System of tubes

Three types: arteries, veins, capillaries
1. ARTERIES- bring oxygenated blood away from the heart;
thin-walled,
elastic, it recoils & rebounds in pulsating
manner.
AORTA- largest artery branching repeatedly
into
small arteries
smallest artery (ARTERIOLES).

2.

CAPILLARIES- fine tubes to which an artery branches

-form connection between arterioles and venules.
- Main function: Exchange of materials- gases,
nutrients and waste products of metabolism
between blood and tissue cells.

3. VEINS-

Bring back blood to the heart

has a wider lumen & equipped with valves that prevent
the back flowing of blood.
VENULES- smallest veins-larger- largest ( VENA CAVA )
