LAGUNA

ETYMOLOGY
The name Laguna came from the word Lagoon.
The province of Laguna was formerly called La
Laguna and La Provincia de la Laguna de Bay as it
was named after Laguna de Bay, the body of water
the forms its northern boundary.

HISTORY OF LAGUNA
1571 - Captain Juan de Salcedo with a band of one hundred Spanish-Mexican
soldiers conquered the province and its surrounding regions for Spain.
1578 - the Franciscan missionaries Juan de Plasencia and Diego de Oropesa were
the earliest Franciscans sent to evangelize Laguna and other provinces.
1580 - from that year the town of Bay, Caliraya, Majayjay, Nagcarlan, Liliw, Pila,
Santa Cruz, Lumban, Pangil and Siniloan were founded.
1670 - delimitation of borders were made between Lucban, Majayjay and Cavite.
The populous town at that time was Bay as the capital of the province.
1688 - when the seat of the provincial government was moved to Pagsanjn.

HISTORY OF LAGUNA
(17621764) British invasion led by Captain Thomas Backhouse that fought by
Francisco de San Juan of Pagsanjn .
1858 - provincial government was moved to Santa Cruz
1896 - thousands of inhabitants of Bay, Los Baos, Nagcarlan, Magdalena, Santa Cruz, and
Pagsanjan had joined the revolutionary Katipunan.
1898 - the last Spanish garrison surrendered to the victorious patriots in Santa Cruz.
(18991901) - Generals Juan Cailles and Paciano Rizal led the defense of Laguna until
June 30, 1901, when surrender became inevitable. Cailles became the
first
Filipino Governor of Laguna under the American flag.
(19421945) - During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, Laguna was a center of
Filipino resistance despite the presence of Makapili collaborators.

Accomplishments:
Brother of Jose Rizal, Paciano Rizal was the brigadier
general of the revolutionary forces. and was elected
Secretary of Finance in the Departmental Government
of Central Luzon. During his younger days he founded
La Juventud Liberal, a reformist student organization
among the leaders was Padre Jose Burgos. Among their
tasks was to secretly distribute copies of the reformist
paper,El Eco Filipino.

VICENTE LIM
Full name: Vicente Podico Lim
Birth Place: Calamba, Laguna
Date of Birth: February 24, 1888
Accomplishments:
Filipino Brigadier General and hero during the World
War II. He was the first Filipino graduate of theUnited
States Military Academy at West Point (Class of 1914).
After the fall of the Philippines he contributed to
theFilipino resistance movementuntil he was captured
and subsequently executed. Lim was one of the seven
Charter Member of the Boy Scout of the Philippines.

PEDRO GUEVARA
Birth Place: Sta. Cruz, Laguna
Date of Birth: February 23, 1879
Accomplishments:
Pedro Guevara was a Philippine soldier, lawyer,
legislator, and Spanish writer . He joined the Filipino
forces during the Philippine Revolution and assisted in
promoting the peace agreement in Biak na Bato. He
served throughout the Spanish-American War and the
Philippine-American War. Later, he became a journalist
for the Spanish language newspaperSoberania
NacionalandVidas Filipinas. His political life started
when he became a memberof the Philippine House of
Representatives from 1909 to 1912 and a member of
the Philippine Senate from 1916 to 1922. In 1921
