The Bleak
Winter of
1886 was
memorable in
the life of
Rizal for Two
reasons

First Reason: He was hungry, sick

and despondent in a strange city.

Second Reason: Brought him great joy

because his first novel came off the
press in March 1887.

Dr. Maximo Viola- His friend arrived Berlin

and loaned him the needed funds to
published his novel.

This book was read by Rizal. This inspires him to

prepare a novel that would depict the miseries of his
people under the lash of Spanish tyrants.

January 2, 1884- during their reunion in Paternos

Residence in Madrid, he proposed the writing of a novel
about the Philippines.

It was unanimously approved by those present, among

whom were Paternos ( Pedro, Maximo & Antonio), Graciano
Lopez Jaena, Evaristo Aguirre, Eduardo de Lete, Julio
Llorente, Melecio Figueroa and Valentin Ventura.

Rizal was disgusted because those compatriots who

were expected to collaborate with him to write the
novel wasted time gambling or flirting with Spanish
seoritas.

End of 1884- he began writing the novel in Madrid and finished about
one- half of it. He went to Paris in 1885, continue writing and finished
one- fourth of the novel. He finished the last one- fourth in Germany. He
wrote the few chapters in Wilhelmsfeld in April- June 1886.

Dr. Maximo Viola, his friend arrived Berlin gladly agreed

to finance the printing cost of Rizals novel and loans
him some money for living expenses.

February 21, 1887- the noli was already finished and ready for
printing.
Berliner Buchdruckrei- Action- Gesselschaft- printing shop
where Rizal let his novel be printed at the lowest rate that is
300 pesos for 2000 copies.

In a rare incident, Rizal was suspected as French spy by the police

in Berlin because there had been a report that Rizal had made a
frequent visits to the villages and little towns in the Rural areas.

Rizal explained to police why he visited those places

and to his favor, the police was satisfied and allowed
him to stay freely in Germany.

Regidor, G. Lopez Jaena, Mariano
Ponce and Felix Hidalgo-Rizal
sent the first copies of the
printed novel to his intimate
friends.

 March 5, 1887- Rizal wrote to

Felix Hidalgo in French

Noli Me Tangere, words taken

from the gospel St. John ( 20:
13-17) signify do not touch
me.

epilogue .
