What is a Material?

The substance from which the tools,

equipments, items etc. that we use everyday are
made

Classes of Materials

Metals

Plastics

Ceramics

Composites

Classes of Material: Metals

Examples: iron, aluminum, copper, gold, .

Properties: ductile, good thermal and electrical

conductors, shiny .

WHY?

Classes of Material: Polymers

Examples: different plastics (polyethylene,

polystyrene), gels, rubber, .

Properties: low density, brittle at low T and

softened at high T, low melting T, generally not
very strong, properties vary widely .

WHY?

Classes of Material: Ceramics

Examples: china, window glass (SiO2) .

Properties: brittle, hard, poor electrical and

thermal conductor, high melting point.

WHY?

Classes of Material: Composites

Examples: fiber glass, reinforced plates, carbon

reinforced aluminum, etc.

Properties: better than the constituent phases.

WHY?

Classes of Material: Semiconductors

Examples: Silicon, Germanium, .

Properties: electrical conductivity intermediate

between conductors and insulators

WHY?

What is Materials Science and Engineering?

why metals are ductile and shiny ? .

The answer to these questions.
Materials Science and Engineering:
interdisciplinary
field are
concerned
with
inventing
why ceramics
brittle and
hard
? .
new materials and improving previously known
materials by developing a deeper understanding
of the structure-processing-property
relationships.
why polymers can behave so different under
different temperatue ? .

Why Materials Science and Engineering?

Why Materials Science and Engineering?

Not trial and error any more ...

Optimize performance for specific applications
via inverse design based on comprehensive
understanding of material systems involved and
rigorous scientific design principles.
