The Difference Between Content

and Performance Standard
Content Standard
- are broad
statements
explaining what
students should
know, care about
and be able to do in
each level of
learning.

Performance Standard
- used to evaluate
what specific,
measurable
evidence is
acceptable in
determining
whether content
standards have
been met.

SUMMARY
The Curriculum Guidelines are being implemented to provide a
more better quality of learning to the students in both public
and private schools. It aims to prepare the students mind, on
the topics that will be discussed at the next grade level, and
on real life situations. Some areas under this order are the
design of the curriculum and the desired outcome of the
program.
On the design of the curriculum, the spiral progression
approach are highly recommended to be used as a teaching
strategy for the preparation, mastery and retention of the
ideas/details that have been tackled in every level to the
students. Building on pupils prior knowledge and skills to allow
gradual mastery from one grade level to the next.Desired
Outcomes of Grade 1 to 10 are defined in terms of
expectancies. These general expectancies are expressed in
specific terms in form of content and performance standards.

The content standards describe the knowledge and skills

that students should attain, often called the "what" of "what
students should know and be able to do." They indicate the
ways of thinking, working, communicating, reasoning and
investigating the important and enduring ideas, concepts,
issues, dilemmas and knowledge essential to the discipline.
While ,performance standards are concrete statements of
how well students must learn what is set out in the content
standards, often called the "be able to do" of "what students
should know and be able to do" Performance standards
specify "how good is good enough." They are the indicators
of quality that specify how adept or competent a student
demonstration must be.
The difference between content standard and performance
standard is Content standards are broad statements
explaining what students should know, care about and be
able to do in each level of learning. Performance standards
are used to evaluate what specific, measurable evidence is
acceptable in determining whether content standards have
been met.

ACTIVITY
Direction: Get a half sheet of paper and answer the following
questions.
1. Why does the overall design of Grade 1 to 10 curriculum
follow the spiral approach?
2. There are two general expectancies that are expressed in
specific terms. What are those two standards? Give a brief
discussion about those two standards.
3. What is the difference between content and performance
standard?

THANK YOU for LISTENING.
