There are few causes lead to stress:
i. Students misbehaviour;
.Bullying, absenteeism, and disrespectfulness.
.3 categories of misbehaviour:
a) Heavy offense: bringing drugs to school, rude against teacher.
b) Moderate offense: inappropriate attire.
c) Light offense:
ii. Workloads;
.High job demand, increased environmental exposures, and overtime work has increased
the stress level (Rusli, Edimansyah, and Naing (2006)).
Workloads;
.In order our Malaysian education system wants to achieve the target of Kurikulum
Bersepadu Sekolah Menengah (KBSM), teachers receive additional workloads in
preparing the lesson plans, teaching aids and etc.
.This changes need a teacher to be good in giving the knowledge, and they also have to
educate the students in the area of physical, emotion, intellects and attitudes.
ii. Interpersonal relationship;
.A teacher may feel stress on relationship with their colleagues or management of the
school which the principal fails to be a good leader.
.The teacher may become the victim of management weaknesses and will lead them
into their unsatisfactory of school management.
Pupil misbehaviour;
iii. Recognition;
.Lack of recognition of work from administrator that contributed to
teachers stress, followed by poor promotion prospects, and lack of
encouragement toward better administrators.
iv. Time and resources difficulties;
.Having a large class was determined as the most significant stress factor
followed by difficulty in completing syllabus in the time available, and lack
of material resources in meeting new educational basis.
EFFECTS
Negative outcome will reduce the physical and mental health of the stress
affected person.
Six strongest disturbing signs are: hardly disconnection of job from private
life, allowing social and professional performance to worsen, abnormal
sleeping, dealing with students only as a scholar, unfriendly gesture, and
acting self protective towards co-workers and students. (Fimian & Santoro,
1983)
Stress leads to rash behaviour, restlessness emotional explosions, extreme
eating or loss of hunger, taking medicines, excessive drinking or smoking, nonappearance in work, and unsteady service history. (Wilkinsons, 1988)
SUGGESTIONS
Teachers should be positive in facing all those challenges which this will
help them to reduce their stress level.
Society also must play their roles which they can give their supports to
help the teachers.
Students must give cooperation to the teachers so that the teachers
can release some burden and stress.
Teachers can involve in outdoor activities to release stress.
CONCLUSION
In order to overcome the stress of teaching, teachers themselves need to
know how to handle all the problem that they faced. Besides, students,
parents, and society also need to cooperate with the teachers so that the
burden of the teachers could be lessen and the teachers will not stress
and the problem of health can be avoid.
