THE AGE OF IMPERIALISM

The effects of the Age of Imperialism and colonization reaches from

the past to impact much of the way our modern world is shaped.
This time period gave birth to a points of view that altered the world.
This same period is also the origin for many literary works that even
todays children can recount. One view that shaped an epoch was
the good-natured, albeit nave and, ultimately destructive belief of
the White Mans Burden.

Imperialism
What is Imperialism?
Imperialism is the extension of a nation
spower over other lands. (Ex, Crusades,
Britains colonies in America, and even our
own territorial expansion)
This new form of imperialism began as
nations now sought nothing less than total
control over other territories.

The White Mans

Burden

Illustration shows Uncle Sam standing at center, gesturing to the left toward
American soldiers boarding ships to return to America after defeating the
Spanish in the Philippines, and gesturing to the right toward a group of
matronly women, one labeled "Daughters of the Revolution", who have just
arrived to educate the peoples of the Philippines.

The White Mans

Burden

Illustration shows Britannia carrying a large white flag

labeled "Civilization" with British soldiers and
colonists behind her, advancing on a horde of natives,
one carrying a flag labeled "Barbarism"

The White Mans

Burden
A poem by Rudyard Kipling

Take up the White Mans burden

Send forth the best ye breed

Go send your sons to exile
To serve your captives' need
To wait in heavy harness
On fluttered folk and wild
Your new-caught, sullen peoples,
Half devil and half child

Take up the White Mans burden

In patience to abide
To veil the threat of terror
And check the show of pride;
By open speech and simple
An hundred times made plain
To seek anothers profit
And work anothers gain

Take up the White Mans burden

And reap his old reward:
The blame of those ye better
The hate of those ye guard
The cry of hosts ye humour
(Ah slowly) to the light:
"Why brought ye us from bondage,
Our loved Egyptian night?

Take up the White Mans burdenHave done with childish daysThe lightly proffered laurel,
The easy, ungrudged praise.
Comes now, to search your
manhood
Through all the thankless years,
Cold-edged with dear-bought
wisdom,
The judgment of your peers!

WHITE MANS BURDEN

WHAT IS A BURDEN?
SOME ARGUED THAT EUROPEANS HAD A MORAL
OBLIGATION OR A DUTY TO CIVILIZE AND HELP
THE PRIMITIVE PEOPLE OF AFRICA AND ASIA.
THEY CALLED THIS RESPONSIBILITY THE
WHITE MANS BURDEN. PART OF THIS
RESPONSIBILITY WAS TO BRING THE CHRISTIAN
MESSAGE TO THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF ASIA
AND AFRICA AS WELL AS WESTERN FORMS OF
GOVERNMENT (DEMOCRACY) AND ECONOMIC
SYSTEMS (CAPITALISM).

ACTIVITY - 1

1. Divide the class into 4 groups with equal members ( as

numbers of students participants may allow).

2. Analyze the poem White Mans Burden by Rudyard

Kipling.
3. All groups should be able to explain :

Group I. - Correctly explain the belief/concept of the White

Mans Burden

Group - II. Cite How and Why Imperialism should be carried

out. Have them use 4 connections in the poem to support
their answer.

Group III - List words or phrases that Kipling uses to

describe indigenous peoples. How do these examples reveal
Kiplings attitude towards these peoples?
Group IV - Using your own words, explain what Kipling
thought was the White Mans Burden. Who, or what, was
supposedly burdensome to the white man?

Enrichment Activities
Evaluation :
Give your analysis on

Neo-colonialism : the last stages of Imperialism

IN order to halt foreign interference in the affairs of developing

countries it is necessary to study, understand, expose and actively
combat neo-colonialism in whatever guise it may appear. For the
methods of neo-colonialists are subtle and varied. They operate
not only in the economic field, but also in the political, religious,
ideological and cultural spheres.

Students may discuss their findings in small groups or prepare

reports to share with the whole class.

ASSIGNMENT :

RATIONALIZATION?
