Bandra-Worli or Rajiv Gandhi sea link is the Indias first cable

stayed bridge to be constructed in the open seas.
The structure consists of :
i.
ii.
iii.
iv.

2432 pre-cast segments

40,000MT of reinforcement
23,000m3 of high-performance concrete
5,400MT of post tensioning strands

The total steel wire used in Bandra-Worli sea link is equal to

the circumference of the earth and weighing around 56,000
African Elephants.

The bridge layout is categorized into three

different parts:
I. Part 1-The north-end approach
structure with Pre-Cast (PC)
segmental construction.
II. Part 2 The Cable-Stayed Bridge at
Bandra and Worli channel.
III. Part 3 The south end approach
structure with Pre-Cast segmental
construction.

Northern & Southern viaducts

The viaducts on either side of the central cable-stayed
spans are arranged in 300m units
consisting of six continuous spans of 50 meters each.
The bridge has been built utilizing the concept of PreCast, post-tensioned, segmental concrete box girder
sections.

Foundation:
The foundations for the BWSL project consist of:
i. 2000-mm diameter piles numbering 120 for the
cable-stayed bridges.
ii. 1500-mm diameter piles numbering 484 for the
approach bridges which is four per pier.

Atop each pile a concrete pier of 150 tonnes was

placed at 50 meters span.
Bridge bearings are of disc type.

Segments:
The segments are used to form the road way in the
bridge.
They weigh around 120-140 tonnes each.
From pier to pier 17 segments form a span.
The segment length varies from 3000 mm to 3200 mm.
Deck post tensioning is performed at the completion.
The Pre-Cast segments are joined together using high
strength epoxy grout with nominal pre-stressing initially.

The bridge can withstand a wind blowing at the speed

of 150 km/hr.
The fish belly shape of the segments will reduce the
speed of the wind up to 25%.
This streamline of wind reduces the drag and protects
the slender deck from stress.

Cable-stayed bridge:
The cable-stayed portion of the Bandra channel is 600
meters and consists of two 250-meter cable supported
main spans flanked by 50 meters conventional
approach spans.
The cable-stayed portion of the Worli channel is 350
meters in overall length and consists of one 150 meters
cable supported main span flanked by two 50 meters
conventional approach spans.

Tower:
A center tower, with an overall height of 128 meters above
pile cap level, supports the superstructure by means of four
planes of cable stay in a semi-harp arrangement.
Bandra :
The tower is cast in-situ reinforced concrete using the
climbing form method of construction.
The overall tower configuration is an inverted Y shape
with the inclined legs oriented along the axis of the bridge.
Tower cable anchorage recesses are achieved by use of
formed pockets.

Worli:
The cable-stayed portion of the Worli channel is 350
meters in overall length.
consists of one 150 meters cable supported main span
flanked by two 50 meters conventional approach spans.
the tower here is also cast in-situ reinforced concrete
using the climbing form method of construction but the
overall tower configuration is I shape with the inclined
legs.

Materials used:
Concrete:
A high performance concrete of grade M60 mixed with micro
slurry silicate is used to plug gaps and make it water proof.
To protect the rebar from cold sea water concrete is mixed
with fly ash as it is an excellent agent for delaying
carbonation.

Advantages of using high performance concrete:

I. High strength
II. High workability
III. High density
IV. Good resistance to chemical attack and low
permeability
V. Attaining high early strength.

Epoxy coated rebar:

Epoxy coated rebar is used as a second line of defense
for corrosion action due to salt water.
Totally 40,000MT of reinforcement steels where used in
the project.
The advantage of using an epoxy coated rebar is that
they have better corrosion resistance when compared to
the uncoated bar.

Epoxy coated rebar

Needed extensive handling

Subjected to uv damage

Requires a touch up after placement

Moderate bonding with concrete

Poor abrasion resistance

Not required

Resists all radiations

Requires a touch up after placement

Excellent bonding with concrete

Good abrasion resistance

Stay cables:
High tensile steel cables are used.
These are the cables which support the bridge
deck on the sea.
The stays transfer their loads on to the pylons.
One end of the stay cable is attached to the
tower and the other end with the bottom of the
segment.

Post tensioning cables:

Around 4,500MT of post tensioning cables where used.
The segments were tied like a string of beads with the
help of these post tensioning cables
These cables are tightened using hydraulic jacks which
are fitted in the segments.
Each pre tensioning strand can withstand 30 tonnes of
weight and totally 19 strands make one cable

Each cable has a number of wires.

Each high tension wire is of 7mm and strength of 6.28
tones
There are used 6 different type of cable.
The difference is number wires in each cable.
They where 61,73,85,91,109,121.
These are packed by 2 layers of HIGH DENSITY POLY
ETHYLENE.

Rod diameter-5.5 -15.0mm in 0.5mm increments

Coil weight 1800 2200kg
Coil dimensions Outside diameter 1250mm max
Inside diameter 850mm min

Advantages of using high tensile steel cables:

High-tensile steels
The enhanced strength-to-weight ratio of our high-tensile
steel rod enables cross-sections to be reduced and delivers:
Reduced cable and superstructure weight (including cable
bands, clamps, hanger cables and saddles).
Reduced cable installation and spinning time.
Reduced construction programme.
Overall project cost savings.

Epoxy grout:
The Pre-Cast segments are joined together using high
strength epoxy grout with nominal prestressing initially.
