INTRODUCTION
Thyristor ratings indicate the voltage,
current, power, temperature limits
within which a thyristor can be used
without damage or malfunction.
For reliable operation of a thyristor,
it should be ensured that its current
and voltage ratings are not exceeded
during its working.

INTRODUCTION
When thysistor a handles voltages,
current and power greater than its
specified ratings, the junction
temperature may rise above the safe
limit and the SCR may get damaged
Therefore the manufacturers of SCRs
make a comprehensive list of the
voltage, current, power, and
temperature rating after carefully
testing the device
If the SCRs are operated under these

ANODE VOLTAGE RATINGS

The anode voltage ratings indicate the
value of maximum voltage that a
thyristor can withstand without a
breakdown of the junction area with
gate circuit open
PEAK WORKING VOLTAGE:
It is the maximum forward blocking
voltage that a SRC can with stand
during its working
PEAK REPETITIVE FORWARD
BLOCKING VOLTAGE:

PEAK SURGE FORWARD BLOCKING

VOLTAGE:
It refers to the peak value of the forward surge
voltage that does not repeat
PEAK WORKING REVERSE VOLTAGE:
It is a maximum reverse voltage that thyristor
can withstand repeatedly
PEAK REPETATIVE REVERSE VOLTAGE:
It specifies the peak reverse voltage. It
specifies the peak reverse voltage that may
occur repeatedly in the reverse direction at
the allowable maximum junction temperature

PEAK SURGE REVERSE VOLTAGE:

It represents the peak value of the reverse
surge voltage that does not repeat.
ON STATE VOLTAGE DROP:
It is the voltage drop between anode and
cathode with specified forward on-state
Current and junction temperature
FORWARD DV/DT RATING:
If the rate of rise of forward anode to cathode
voltage is high, thyristor may turn on even
when there is no gate signal or the voltage
is less than forward breakover voltage

CURRENT RATINGS
A thyristor is made up of semiconductor
material, its thermal capacity is therefore
quite small. Even for short over current,
the junction temperature may exceeds the
rated value and the device may get
damage.
As the junction temperature is dependent
on the current handled by the thyristor, a
correct choice of current rating is essential
for long working life of a device

AVERAGE ON STATE CURRENT:

The forward voltage drop across
conducting SCR is low, therefore the
power loss in thyristor depends
primarily on forward average an
state current

=Forward on state voltage across

RMS ON STATE CURRENT:

The heating of resistive elements
of a thyristor, such as metallic joints,
leads and interfaces depends on the
forward rms current Irms
The rms current ratings is used as an
upper current limit for constant as
well as pulsed anode current ratings
of the thyristor . The value of the rms
forward current is same for different
conduction angle

SURGE CURRET RATINGS:

When a thyristor is working under its
repetitive voltage and current rating , its
permissible junction temperature is never
exceeded.
A thyristor may be subjected to abnormal
operating condition due to faults or short
circuits .
In order to deal with such a case, surge
current rating are given on SCRs. A surge
current ratings indicates the current
caused by non repetative faults

DI/DT RATING
This rating indicates the maximum rate of
rise of current from anode ti cathode
without any harm to device
When the thyristor is turned on,
conduction starts at a place near the gate.
If the rate of rise of anode current di/dt is
large as compared to the spreading time
velocioty of the carrier across the cathode
junction, local hot spot will be formed

DI/DT RATING CONTINUED

This causes the junction
temperature to rise above the safe
limit and as a consequence, SCR may
get damaged permanently.
Therefore a limit on the value of
di/dt at turn on is specified in
amperes per microsecond for all
SCRs.
Typical value of di/dt are 20 to 500
A/u sec
