General Guidelines ESP Micro-Classes:

Before you start, consider that you will work with an

audience of young adults (university Ss from the School of
Education) with a FALSE BEGINNER level.
You may ask Ss or professors from the School of Education
in order to determine which TOPICS in the field of
Education could be relevant for Ss to work with throughout
their English course (Ingls Instrumental).
The TOPICS must be appropriate for any speciality
(mencin) of the School of Education

Since you will be working under a Text-oriented approach you

must look for reading texts on these TOPICS and design
exercises including some of the reading skills (specific
objectives) on the list.
The texts you select must also correspond to the typology you
were assigned in class (description, definition. classification,
instructions, narration, biography, advertisements, references,
catalogues, processes).
The reading text should not be either too long or too short. It
should be long enough to be covered throughout the class
session.
Write clear and simple instructions so that Ss can follow them
easily.

Make sure to include the source (website) from which you excerpted
the reading text. This is for the Ss to notice that they are working with
authentic materials.
The particular features of the text will determine the type of skills that
can be practiced as well as the type of exercises to be designed.
Organize the activities in your material into 3 main sections: a) Prereading; b) Reading; and c) Post-reading
Be AS CREATIVE AS POSSIBLE! Organize the information in such a way
that it results appealing to the Ss. SURPRISE ME!!!
Use different fonts and different sizes to make it more attractive.
Include ilustrations/pictures/graphic organizers from time to time.
Exercises can be designed in such a way that Ss work either
individually, through pair work or in groups.

Both the reading texts and the written exercises should be

interesting, relevant, appealing, motivating and appropriate for
Ss proficiency level.
They must be graded: the easiest exercises first, and then those
that demand a greater challenge and effort on the part of Ss. All
the strategies must help Ss to accomplish the specific objectives
set for the class.
You can surf the net so as to grasp some ideas for designing your
materials.

When you have finished designing your material, prepare a

Lesson Plan for your ESP microclass following the same sequence
of the activities already designed (use the 2 sample plans as a
guide)
Divide your plan into the 3 main sections you used for the
material: a) Pre-reading; b) Reading; and c) Post-reading

Consider that your class should be Student-centered so LET

Ss DO MOST OF THE WORK.

While teaching, make your Ss feel comfortable and willing

to participate and learn. Your attitude as a teacher is
essential for achieving this.
Move around to monitor Ss performance while working on
the written exercises.
Provide an adequate feedback.
