Analyst Predictions for Wireless

Technology
Convergence of wireless data and computing
will lead to significant innovations in pervasive
computing.
Worldwide mobile subscribers will grow from
395 million to over 1 billion in 2005 (IDC)
According to Gartner:2004, nearly 800 million
people will use mobile devices, forcing at least
half of Fortune 2000 companies to support
wireless systems
IDC predicts the worldwide market in 2004 for
B2B and B2C e-commerce will total $3.1
trillion , up from $350.4 billion last year.
By 2003, it is anticipated that the United States
will be introducing 3G (Third-generation
technology).
Beyond 2005, the majority of data traffic will
remain to be Short Message Service (SMS)
which until now is mainly used for messaging
between individuals (Yankee Group, Europe)

Wireless vs. Mobile

SMS vs. WAP

SMS (Short Messaging
Service)
Similar to paging, SMS is a
service for sending short text
messages to mobile phones.
Messages must be no longer
than 160 alpha-numeric
characters and contain no
images or graphics.

WAP (Wireless Application

Protocol)
WAP is a secure specification that
allows users to access information
instantly via handheld devices such as
mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios,
smartphones and communicators.
WAPs that use displays and access the
Internet run what are called
microbrowsers--browsers with small file
sizes that can accommodate the low
memory constraints of handheld
devices and the the low-bandwidth
constraints of a wireless-handheld
network.
Because WAP is fairly new, it is not a
formal standard yet. It is still an
initiative that was started by Unwired
Planet, Motorola, Nokia, and Ericsson.

MySAP Mobile Time & Expenses

Key functionality: Time sheets
The mobile time sheet communicates with
the Cross-Application Time Sheet (CATS) in
your main SAP system. Information transfers
easily from one system to the other.
Employees just point and click to enter,
copy, change, and delete time-sheet items.
Data entry fields can be customized for
various employee profiles to optimize data
entry for various roles and individuals.
Detailed, long text descriptions of activities
can be entered offline to enable better
understanding of projects and billing.
Each employee can save a preliminary
version of time data in the main SAP system
to serve as a backup (for use in the event a
laptop is lost, for example). Follow-on
business processes such as approval and
billing are triggered when the employee
releases a final version of this data.
Mobile employees are kept informed of the
status of time data sent for approval. This
enables them to react quickly to changing
situations.

Key functions: Travel expenses

The system displays the employee's trip list
and the status of each trip (draft
synchronized, approved, or paid).
Users can create new trips, copy existing
trips, and assign individual receipts to each
trip.
Costs can be distributed to different
accounting objects, such as projects and
orders.
Data validation and plausibility checks can
be performed offline.
Errors detected during synchronization are
reported on the employee's mobile device,
enabling immediate correction.
Tracking of exact reimbursement amounts
enables better control of employee
expenses.
An expenses summary sheet can be printed
out for the employee's records or for
administration purposes.
Customized employee profiles allow rapid
access to personalized and role-based
information.
Standard customizing allows support for
local and regional differences, such as
