Introduction to

Thermography

Infrared thermography defined

Infrared thermography is the science
of
acquisition and analysis of thermal
information from non-contact thermal
imaging devices

Visual versus infrared

Reflections from visible
light

Radiation from the object

itself

Camera principle
The camera converts invisible infrared radiation
into a visible image.

The blue cup radiates more than the gold

print.
The temperature is similar, but it appears
different

Heat transfer modes

Conduction
Convection
Radiation

Conduction definition
Heat conduction is the direct transfer of
thermal energy from molecule to
molecule, caused by collisions between
the molecules.

Convection - definition
Convection is a heat transfer mode
where a
fluid is brought into motion, either by
gravity or another force, thereby
transferring heat from one place to
another.

Radiation - definition
Heat transfer by emission and
absorption
of thermal radiation is called radiation
heat transfer.

Emissivity - definition
Emissivity is the ratio of the radiation emitted
by a
Real body, compared to the radiation emitted
by
a Blackbody, both at the same temperature,
and
at the same wavelength.

How does colour affect

emissivity?

Image Analysis
There are two different analysis
principles:
Qualitative Analysis
Quantitative Analysis

Qualitative
Qualitative thermography relies on analysis
of
thermal patterns to reveal the existence
and
locate the position of anomalies.

Quantitative
Quantitative thermography uses
temperature
measurement to determine the seriousness
of
an anomaly.

Need For Baseline Data

Baseline data must be systematically and
consistently
collected.
Comparison also required with the similar
equipments.

Condition Monitoring
Applications
Furnaces and boilers
Mechanical, friction
Fluid flow problems
Tanks and vessels
Electrical maintenance

Pump bearing

Overheated motor bearing. Over

80C on bearing housing.

Belt drive

Loose or tight belt heats up abnormally

Conveyor belts
Heated
bearing
shows up.
It takes only
a few hours
to check the
condition of
rollers
throughout
the belt.

Relief Valves

Qualitative analysis helps to find out a

valve is passing or not.

Furnace items

Flange Leak

Refractory insulation

Worn refractory insulation

outside of a trident duct.

Pipe sediment

Sediment along the length of this pipe section

shows up cool

Tank sediment

Sediment in a tank shows up as cool area at the

bottom

Tank levels

Electric motor bearing

Overheated motor
bearing. Over 80C on
bearing housing.
