What is 3G?
 3G stands for the third generation of
wireless communication technology. It
refers to pending improvements in
wireless data and voice communications
through any of a variety of proposed
standards. The immediate goal is to raise
transmission speeds from 9.5K to 2M
bit/sec.
 It’s development is based on initiative of
ITU called IMT-2000 and RACE called
UMTS
1st Generation Wireless Technology
 Technology based on Analog signaling
 Primarily based on circuit switched
technology and designed for VOICE not
DATA
 System implemented in North America
known as AMPS and NMT, similarly in
Europe was called TACS
2nd Generation Wireless Technology
 Based on low-band digital system data
signaling
 GSM, FDMA, TDMA, PDC
 CDMA
 Not suitable for web browsing and
multimedia
2.5 & 2.5+ Generation Wireless Networks

 Virtual
explosion of internet usage has
impacted its development
 HSCSD
 GPRS
 EDGE
 Slow by current standards
Generati Type Time Description

First Analog 1980s Voice centric, multiple
standards (NMT, TACS,
AMPS etc.)
Second Digital 1990s Voice centric multiple
standards (GSM, TDMA,
CDMA)
2.5 Higher rate Late Introduction of new higher
data 1990s speed data services to bridge
the gap between the second
and third generation,
including services such as
GPRS and EDGE
Third Digital 2000s Voice and data centric, signal
Multimedia standard with multiple modes

Migration Strategies
 Introduction trials to test infrastructure, handsets
and application etc.
 Introduction of WAP-based services that bring
the Web to the wireless phone. In short-term
WAP and, in longer term, XML will provide a
standard Framework for accessing wireless
Internet content, Enabled by 2.5G/3G.
 The development of mobile Web portals.
 Development of micro browsers and operating
systems.
 Wide acceptance of short-range wireless
connectivity technologies like Blue tooth etc.
3G Transmission Standards
 Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA)
W-CDMA, also known as CDMA Direct Spread, is a 3G
radio transmission technology favored by Europe. It can
be built upon existing GSM networks and represents the
obvious next step for current system operators. As such,
it is expected to gain widespread acceptance in Asia,
where GSM systems are prevalent.
 cdma2000
Also called CDMA Multi-Carrier, cdma2000 is a 3G
standard developed by the CDMA Development Group
(CDG) and favored by the U.S. It is derived from the
narrowband cdmaOne digital standard and provides a
clear evolutionary path for existing cdmaOne operators.
3G System Capabilities
 Capability to support circuit and packet data at
high bit rates:
• 144 kilobits/second or higher in high mobility
(vehicular) traffic
• 384 kilobits/second for pedestrian traffic
• 2 Megabits/second or higher for indoor traffic
 Interoperability and roaming Common billing/user
profiles:
• Sharing of usage/rate information between service

providers
• Standardized call detail recording
• Standardized user profiles
 Capability to determine geographic position of
mobiles and report it to both the network and the
3G: Applications, Services and Market

 By offering their customers new user-friendly high-

speed multimedia services, mobile operators will
access new sources of revenues.
 Via their 2G/3G quad-band (900/1800/1900/2200
Mhz) / dualmode multimedia mobile phones of
tomorrow, users will access three main families of
applications and services:
 Always-on—for example, e-mail, personal
organizer, traffic management, automation, sales,
and so on.
 Information—for example, Web surfing, corporate
Intranet, net games, music, news services, location,
events and transportation services.
 Purchasing—for example, on-line shopping,
banking, gambling, ticketing.
Specific Application
 AUDIO
 VOICE OVER INTERNET PROTOCOL
 STILL IMAGES
 MOVING IMAGES
 VIRTUAL HOME ENVIRONMENT
 ELECTRONIC AGENTS
