Public Speaking and

Oral Communication
Lecture 1

Welcome to Public Speaking and Oral

Communication

Here you will learn practical skills and techniques in speaking with confidence
and creativity

My name is Toby Teh

Room: PG-015

Email: tehtc@utar.edu.my

10 years experience in:

Creative writing

Directing, acting, writing in theatre

Public speaking and theatre training

English Education

There is Only One Rule to

Public Speakiang

Theory is useless if there is no practice

Its Public Speaking, not Public Thinking, so if you dont speak, you dont
improve

10,000 videos and 10,000 books on public speaking will never match the
learning experience of 10 minutes of speaking

Good language skills do not mean good public speaking skills

So if you want to get good, you must speak, and you must practice

This is what you will be experiencing this entire semester

Aboutq My Classes

Answers come from you; I just ask questions

Slides and tutorials dont have notes and stuff, so if you dont write your own
notes, or you dont come to class, haha, you dont have any notes to refer to

This course is 100% practical, no exams, so there are no facts or figures to

memorize and regurgitate

By answering my questions, completing the activities and observing your

actions, you develop your own style

You will not learn how to speak like Obama or Trump or me

You will learn to speak like you

At the Beginning of Every Class

1.

Rearrange yourself into random groups (which I will designate)

2.

Shake hands with 3 new people

1.

Maintain eye contact

2.

Smile

3.

Talk about 3 things about yourself

4.

Dont sit and wait for people to come to you

5.

Stand up and walk to people and introduce yourself

3.

This is a simple activity that breaks shyness and builds confidence, and you
must do it on your own at the beginning of every class

4.

Students who do not do this automatically will do 20 push ups and then shake
hands

Interaction Patterns
1.

In every class, there will be activities which you will have to participate in

2.

All activities proceed in the following order

1.

Individual Work- Think by yourself, write your answers (highly recommended)

2.

Pair/Group Discussion- Discuss, share, and interact with your designated partners
or groups

3.

Whole Class Feedback- I will call upon random students to share their discussions
with the rest of the class

First Activity

Think of a moment when you were talking in a casual setting (e.g. with
friends or family)

What was your purpose?

What was the conversation like? (e.g. Did one person talk a lot? Were there
interruptions?)

What were you talking about?

How did you feel?

What can you remember doing?

Second Activity

Think of a moment when you talking in a more formal, non-casual setting

(e.g. with a teacher, or a police officer)

What was your purpose? What were you trying to achieve?

Did you achieve your purpose?

What was the conversation like?

What were you talking about?

How did you feel?

What can you remember doing?

Third Activity

Think of an event where you were talking to more than one person at a time
(e.g. a presentation, a group discussion)

What was your purpose? What were you trying to achieve?

Did you achieve your purpose?

What were you talking about?

How did you feel?

What can you remember doing?

Fourtha Activity

Compare all the three different incidents you were discussing just now

When were you:

More effective at communicating

Less effective at communicating

What were the differences?

What were the similarities?

What made you more or less effective?

How did they affect you?
