Stringdominated
ensembles

Percussion ensemble - is a
musical ensembleconsisting of
onlypercussion instruments.
Although the term can be used to
describe any such group, it
commonly refers to groups of
classically trained percussionists
performing primarily
classical music.

Ranat ek Xylophone is a Thai musical instrument in the


percussion family that consists of 21 wooden bars suspended by
cords over a boat-shaped trough resonator and struck by two
mallets. It is used as a leading instrument in thepiphatensemble.

Khong wong yai- is a circle with


gongs used in the music of Thailand.
It has 16 tuned bossed gongs in a
rattan frame and is played with two
beaters. The player sits in the middle
of the circle. It is used in thepiphat
ensemble to provide the skeletal
melody the other instruments of the
elaborate ensemble.

Two kinds of Cymbals


Ching is a small dance orchestra cymbals.
Chap - are like the knobbed cymbals found in the Buddhist
rituals of Tibet and China.

Two kinds of Drums


Tapone/Taphon - is a traditional drum ofThailand. It
isbarrel-shapedwith two heads, and is played by the
hands and fingers of both hands, much like the more
popularcongas.
Klong that -are largebarrel drumsused in the
classical music ofThailand. They are played with
large wooden sticks. They are usually played in a pair
and used in thepiphatensemble.

Pi nai oboe
Pi nai oboe -is the generic term for any of a variety of
quadruplereedoboesused in the traditionalmusicof
Thailand.

The Mahori bands of Thailand and Cambodia and the seb
noi of Laos are called string ensembles because they
emphasize bowed and plucked chordophones.

There are three Basic kinds of Cordophones

SAWRU

Saw Sam Sai - is a traditionalbowed


string instrumentofThailand. Its body is made from
a special type of coconut covered on one end with
animal skin, and it has three silk strings.
Saw Duang - is a two-stringed instrument used in
traditional Thai music. The sound is produced by the
bow made from horsetail hair which goes between
the strings made from silk.

Thai Chakay -is a pluckedzitherused in Thai music. It is made of


wood in a stylizedcrocodileshape and is approximately 20cm high
and 140cm long. Its highest two strings are made of silk yarn or
nylon and lowest is made of brass. It has raised frets made of
bamboo, which are affixed to the fretboard with wax or glue.
