Seminar and report instructions

Groups of two people will give a presentation and write a report from a
failure analysis article in English
The presentation time is 20 minutes
The presentation and the report should include:

short review of the failure case

description of the material
description of the research method(s)
description of the failure type(s)
NO copy-paste!!!

Use the thesis writing guide as a report guide

Laboratory cases

Groups of four people study a failed part in laboratory and write a report

The groups will be formed from two seminar groups

Each group will have one person who works in Department of Materials
Science groups will work quite independetly
Each group makes a real failure analysis:

Collection of background information

Visual inspection and photography

Study of failed surface

stereo microscopy (& SEM studies)

Material characterization

conditions, material, etc.

optical microscopy (& SEM studies)

hardness measurements etc. when needed

Analysing
Reporting

The laboratory case report

1. Background

description of the case

good photographs of the failed part

2. Materials and methods

description of the research methods

description of the failed material

3. Results and discussion

what was done and how you solve the case

optical micrographs, SEM studies, hardness measurements, etc

4. Conclusions

clear information on the cause of the failure and the failure mechanism
lessons learned and how the material/design/conditions should be improved

Report in English or in Finnish

Deadline 30.5.2015
