Introduction

Stir casting
It involves producing a melt of the selected matrix material,
followed by the introduction o f a reinforcing material into
the melt
Then the solidification of the melt containing suspended
particles to obtain the desired distribution of the dispersed
phase in the cast matrix
In composites produced by this method, particle distribution
will change significantly depending on process parameters
during both the melt and solidification stages of the process.

ECAP refines the grain size of matrix material. In Al5 vol.%

SiCp composite grain size was reduced to 8 lm from 45 lm
after two ECAP passes whereas in Al10 vol.% SiCp
composite grain size was refined to 16 lm from 45 lm after
first ECAP pass. Hardness and compression test were
conducted at room temperature to evaluate the
mechanical properties of the composites. Both the
composites exhibit mprovement in mechanical properties
after ECAP.
Samples of required diameter were machined from the cast
composite billets for Ecap.
The final size sample was 19.3 mm and 90 length.Sliced

To optimize of stir casting process parameters to minimize
the specific wear of Al-SiC composites by Taguchi method.
The microstructures of Al-SiC composite were observed by
scanning electron microscope (SEM).
The most significant parameter which affected on specific
wear was SiC content which contributes 88.67%. Adding
content of SiC from 0 to 15 wt. % can decrease the specific
wear of Al-SiC composites about 90.08

To synthesize metal matrix composite using 6061Al as

matrix material reinforced with ceramic Al2O3 particulates
using liquid metallurgy route in particular stir casting
technique.
Hardness and tensile properties of the prepared composite
were determined before and after addition of Al2O3
particulates to note the extent of improvement.
The hardness and tensile properties are higher in case of
composites when compared to unreinforced 6061Al matrix,
also increasing addition level of reinforcement

The main objective is to evaluate the ultimate tensile
strength, hardness, density and the microstructure of SiC
particulate reinforced Al matrix composites as a function of
volume of SiC.
It was found that the hardness increases with increasing
weight percentage of silicon carbide. The best results have
been obtained at 20% weight fraction of SiC particles.

Rapidly solidified (RS) powder of 6061 + 26mass% Si alloy
were performed using the oscillating-die extrusion method
TEM did not reveal any significant changes in the
morphology of the silicon particles, even when a high
extrusion ratio and the material annealing after
deformation were used. Hot compression tests on asextruded rods

Micro hardness of the composites was measured in as cast, as

annealed condition and after each ECAP pass using a Vickers
micro hardness tester.
Final sample were polished with 0.5 diamond paste.
And compressive test also carried out instron machine.
Almost 100% densification achieved.
There is a considerable improvement in hardness and strength
even after one pass.

ECAP
The tool is a block with two intersecting channels of identical
cross-section.
A well lubricated billet of the same cross-section is placed into
one of the channels, and a punch then presses it into the
second channel.
Under these conditions the billet will move as a rigid body,
and deformation is achieved ideally by simple shear in a thin
layer at the crossing plane of the channels.
When the punch is finished it is retreated and the billet has
been uniformly deformed, except for a small zone in the lower
part of the sample and in the end regions.

Objectives and scope of Research

OBJECTIVES

1) To synthesis silicon carbide particle reinforced aluminium metal

matrix composite specimen using STIR CASTING method.
2) To study the effect of weight percentages of silicon carbide on
tensile strength of aluminum metal matrix composite.
Scope of work

1. Model can be used in Aero or automobile industries

NEED FOR RESEARCH

1. It depicts that a considerable amount of work has been
carried out by previous Investigators
to prepare the
mechanical properties of Al6061-SiC composite.
2. The composite were prepared using stir casting method in
which amount of reinforcement is varied 10%,20% and
30%.
3. The prepared composite of Al6061-SiC is characterized by
micro structural studies and hardness, density, and tensile
strength were evaluated as per the
standards. The
microphotographs of the composite revealed fairly uniform
distribution of the particles in Al6061-SiC composites with
clustering at few places.

The alloy temperature is elevated to TC1, which is higher

than the liquidus temperature TL (T C1 > TL)
The agitator is lowered, and the paddles are rotated to stir
the metal at a temperature T C1. The crucible is then cooled
to a temperature T C2 intermediate between the solidus
and the liquidus temperature (TS < T C2 < TL)
The following operations are then performed
simultaneously:
(1) the agitator is stopped,
(2) the paddles are raised,
(3) the induction heating means are retracted downward to release
the crucible. The thermocouple is retracted upward. As soon as
operations 1 to 3 have been executed, the centrifuged casting
motor is started.
